Cole commits to arsenal
After helping Arsenal lift the FA Cup with a vital penalty, Ashley Cole has declared that he intends to stay with The Gunners.
The England star's future at Highbury had been thrown into considerable doubt following the tapping-up row with Chelsea, with Cole set to learn whether he will be punished for the affair on June 1. European giants such as Barcelona were rumoured to hold a strong interest, with boss Arsene Wenger previously expressing his concerns that Cole's agent Jonathan Barnett would seek to move the player on rather than sign a new contract. Whilst Arsenal are yet to agree a new deal with the player, who has reportedly asked for a trebling of his wages, Cole took the opportunity to pledge his future to North London after holding his nerve in the FA Cup final penalty shoot-out. The left back was one of five Arsenal players who all put away their spot kicks, and insisted that his delight at helping see off Manchester United was evidence of his love for the club. "A lot of things have been written about me in the past few weeks that just aren't true," said Cole. "But I think that penalty showed how much this club means to me. "What more do I have to do to prove that? I have two years left on my contract and I intend to honour those years. "Will I be at Arsenal next season? Yes." Cole was predictably the focus of taunts from the United fans as they comprehensively dominated the majority of the game, although was delighted to turn the tables on Arsenal's bitter rivals as his side held on for a fortuitous win. "I wanted to shove the stick they gave me back down their throats - that was why the penalty meant so much for me," Cole continued. "They were getting at me because of the Chelsea thing, but in the end I was the one celebrating and it was the best way to respond. "I suppose I should be used to it by now, I've had three months of it." |
