What's the scariest flick you ever seen ?

My top 5:

5. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

4. The Shining (1980)

3. The Exorcist (1973)

2. Rosemary's baby (1968)

1. Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)

=========

Some other notable mentions include - Ringu (japanese, not American version), poltergeist and the sixth sense. I watched Salo once when I was like 18 and it scared the hell of me, sickest movie I ever seen. Supposed to have been banned all over the planet.

Movies like Cannibal holocaust, texas chainsaw massacre, guinea Pigeau dont scare me.

What is scary movie? I am not a fan of horror movies but the horror movies for a long time thrive on blades/knives, blood, music and sound. Combination of these can make people jump. I think "The Omen" was the one I remember as "good" movie with not much of effects (not just horror but a good movie). I haven't seen the whole Exorcist and Shining.
But the part 2 "Silence of the Lambs" (if not itself) should be classified as horror movie and I will probably rate them better than most horror moives (all series). But atleast you are nominating old movies so it is not as much about technology and growing imagination of directors which makes a big difference

You got into the trap too !! Using the "real story" publicity stunt, I guess they made it into the highest earning low-budget movie ever..

Scary movies ?

Movies that scare the living daylights off you....

What scares me is not big ugly zombies with eyes popping out or serial killers going rampage on teenage girls...

Usually its the fear of the "unknown" and characters acting in an unpredictable manner.

Like in shining - Jack Nicholson going crazy and trying to kill his wife and son with a big axe.. and just the way they made it, the river of blood washing down the hotel..

Or Exorcist - girl being possessed by an unknown demon.. acting all unpredictable, we root for the girl's wellbeing, but no one knows how she is gonna behave and what if she's gonna kill the priests.

Or in Rosemary's baby... we know somethings wrong from the beginning about the building and how she gets pregnant.... and its even scarier than exorcist coz they dont show the face of evil... its about something going wrong, terribly wrong.... and its our own fear, not the gore they show that scares... its the fear of unknown.

And as for Salo, its a big exception... prolly the sickest movie ever made that I dont even wanna discuss - just that it was made by a sick man to scar kids for life.

The Shinning, amazing cinematography from Stanley Kubrick, everything about the movie is so perfect horror, from the opening music and scenery to the final seconds when Jack Nicholson dead, sitting in the snow...

I mean, just watch this scene...

Room 1408 was also surprisingly good horror but no where near The Shinning..

That was sooo creepy. My favourite scenes are the typewriter scenes though. Especially when Wendy finds out how much work Jack has really been doing... that made the hair at the back of my neck stand!

Another creepy scene from shinning which i don't want to post here is the one towards the end when Wendy is running down the stairs with a knife in her hand and for a second see's two men, one in a tux and the other in a bear suit in one of the rooms... and they stop what their doing to look at her... that was wired & creepy...

JAP horror is the best... Audition is the creepy, and the ending is shocking beyond words.

But it relies mostly on the ending, so, you gotta not read any reviews be4 watching.

You can watch the entire movie on Youtube:

when Exorcist starts ie the first 5 minutes.. the creepy music, the eery scenes, the wierdo girl..
Thats enough to send shivers down my spine and i have to switch channels.

I found SEAN of the DEAD.. a VERY good horror comedy.. i cudnt stop laughing- recommend it to u alllll!!!

The HOSTEL is all blood and guts..not scary but just bloddy and disgusting like Saw movies.

Chucky was good.. ie CHILDS PLAY... first movie was well scary after that it got a bit funny and black-comedy like

Yeah...imagine being in her position!

And it was quite disturbing what they were doing. Was it a bear or a rabbit?

It was a bear suit... the thing that fascinates me about The Shinning is that there is a lot of stuff going on in the back ground in that movie that the average viewer does not pick up..

If you watch the movie carefully, the decor and arcitecture ( carpets, walls & even tinned food cans in the store room) in that hotel relates to native american (red indians) theme..

If you read the book, it says that the hotel was made on an anchient Red indian burial ground, the americans, when conquering that region looted and killed the red indians to claim their land.... the whole blood in the lift thing is supposed to that of the suffering Red indians who were killed... This is the reason that the hotel is haunted..

The scene with the man in the bear suit, servicing the rich white aristrocrat is supposedly meant to portray how the white man ruled over the red indian (bear)... well that's one of the theories anway..

Pretty interesting stuff..

If you think that is creepy, you will have a heart attack after watching Audition...

There is no other movie on Amazon.com, that comes with a warning:

--> If you want the full sledgehammer-to-the-stomach effect of Audition, stop reading this review now.

or

---> Audition is by no means an easy movie to watch--even hardcore horror fans may have trouble--but it will stay with you for a long, long time.

Is Audition gory or scary? There's a big difference between gore and horror. Gore movies are usually utter trash. Let me know...if it's horror I'd probably go out and get a copy.

No its not gore... its pure pyschological horror firmly grounded in reality with some elements of surrealism..... no creeping ghosts, no ugly monsters, no slashers or serial killers, no supernatural..... its highly suspenseful and extremely well made... the way the plot moves gives you the false notion of being an elegant, aesthetically pleasing drama movie about a likable, rich movie producer trying to find a young bride holding a fake audition...

Thats until the last half an hour, where the ending shocks/scares the bejeezus out of you.

No movie - including Shining or exorcist - has such an effect... though they got scary elements throughout their length, but not such a powerful, mind blowing ending.

Agreed, enjoyed it... the most creepiest part in that movie is the last split second, when the guy is standing in the basement facing the corner - then the camera goes black..

a lot of people think horror is all about monsters and zombies..

Well, it scared and shocked me like anything.. scared because I never knew such cruel people exist in the world. I was only 18 when I saw it and didnt eat or sleep for 2 days.. even to this day, I dont dare to watch this movie again.. and I have seen flicks like exorcist, evil dead, even guinea pig and other supposedly scary ones.. good for you that you didnt finish watching the flick coz the ending is just over the top sadistic/cruel/scary.

Salo is supposed to show the evil nature of fascism. The director - pasolini - was a communist and wanted to show the excesses done in the name of fascism in Mussolini's Italy. He based the story on Marquis de Sade's crazy rants.

This movie is so disturbing that it has been labelled the most dangerous movie ever made . That says it all.

Another thing that gave this movie "cult status" is that the director was murdered less than a week after this movie was released.. and his murder case hasnt been solved still.. but its suspected that he was killed for making this movie.

Hey we got two movies in common

But the rest are not that scary.

The Grudge particularly is a stupid, idiotic version of the brilliantly scary Japanese movie Ju-on.

well i do get what u are trying to say...dont know if ghosts exists or not...but when human beings are being cruel to human beings thats the sadest part and this movie had gone extreme!! i knew bout the director being murdered ( i think for making such a movie he should have been killed ).

Exactly.. in Salo, its just the thought that such people exist - who can be cruel to that extent - thats scary... cruel, wicked humans are more scarier than ghosts or monsters.

BTW, never got your pm you want me to pm you my email ID ?

Sponge bob Square Pants Movie... that was just Disturbing on another level.... *shudders*

But seriously, don't really watch much movies, can't get myself to sit down long enough seeing as their just boring. Blair Witch as pretty scary when i watched it first, but i was like 14 then, now its ok.

Cannot get into Scary Movies since i always try and imagine how they Filmed it, must have been funny to make etc. etc.

I prefer more Dramatic movies with a Proper storyline and Plot. Along the Lines of Shawshank Redemption, Platoon, Elephant man to name a few.

Films that get you Thinking.
