U-15 WC Round 2 (League phase)
Sunday, April 27, 2008
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: If one went by the result of Holland’s opening match in the CLICO International Under-15 Cricket Championship against Bangladesh on Saturday in the previous week, then at least theoretically Pakistan should beat them by a comfortable margin, here at the National Stadium in Providence, in their opening match of the league round and attain the top position in their group at the earliest. Pakistan, winners of the knockout stage of the tournament when they beat hosts West Indies by a mere two runs in the final at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, on Thursday, now embark upon the second stage of the under-15 contest — the league round — as do all the other seven participating teams. Pakistan were playing against Holland in their first match of Group 2 late on Saturday and after the completion of this phase, they may again qualify for yet another final by next Sunday. On April 19, the opening day of the knockout phase of the tournament, Bangladesh had prevailed over Holland by a convincing nine-wicket margin, after the latter had been bowled out for a poor 94 runs. Bangladesh reached the target in only 20.5 overs. In the knockout stage, four teams — Malaysia, Holland, Ireland and Kenya — bowed out in the first round of matches played on the first day of the competition. West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Intenational Cricket Council (ICC) Americas Development XI then moved into the semifinals. Pakistan’s league round matches in Group 2 are: April 26 v Holland at Providence, April 27 v Americas Development XI at Bourda, Georgetown and April 29 v Malaysia at Providence. The two semifinals will be played on May 1 at the Progress Park and the La Sagesse Park in Grenada with the two fifth to eighth places playoffs scheduled for the Shaw Park in Tobago on May 1 and 2. The third place playoff will be played at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on May 3 with the Queen’s Park Oval also staging the league round final on Sunday, May 4. The closing ceremony will be held at Pier 1 in Chaguaramas in Trinidad, later the same day after the final. Who are they playing in Finals...?
Zafar Gohar has been the stand out bowler (Left Arm China Man, I believe) and Mohammad Naeem (Opener) the stand out batsman; others with consistent performances have been Usman Qadir (Qadir's Son and Leggie), Babar Azam (The skipper and 2nd Opener) and Kumail Abbass (Main Pacer) P.S. Mohammad Naeem might already be vying for Inzi's place in the senior team...literally: ![]() And Babar Azam might as well be be known as Babar Akmal: ![]()
