Do women really appreciate cricket?

Ok Miggy Sahib will soon be known as Miggy Shaheed but just wondering if its possible for women to actually appreciate a game like cricket ?

Most of the females of my generation (auntiyan) have very strange notions of cricket

A family friend of ours routinely asks me if Wasim is still playing or do you know a guy called Majid - does he still bowl for Pakistan? etc etc

Not to generalize in any way as we have some dedicated fans on PP but whats the general impression about women and their appreciation of the finer points of cricket?

Well some girls do take a genuine interest in cricket, but there's very few of them. Which is fair enough; cricket doesn't appeal to most of the fairer sex.

Mothers/aunties/etc may have a passing interest in the game because all the males in the household watch it. My mother saw a match a while ago and proclaimed,

"Oh, Shahid Afridi has a beard now?"

Thing I noticed about most girls is that they follow a sport because of a looks of a particular player. I have friends who join in the soccer world fever only becuas eof good looking guys. They would all prefer beckham over Ronaldo only because the former looks better.

My wife hates cricket - clearly my son took after her.

My mother thinks she likes cricket, but in reality, she knows nothing about the game.

However, my mother in law is very knowledgable about cricket...when I'm in Pak, the 2 of us can sit in the same room for a whole ODI game and not feel any tension...

well at least here in trinidad most women would know the key players or the players from their country. Not too much details about the players or anything like that.

Here most women come with their family, friends to make a lime esp for the odis.
Only a handful might be knowledgable the rest will applaude for boundaries or wickets.

my grandmother used to love cricket, thanks to my dad who took the pain to explain the game. she used to get so involved in the game and used to scold the indian fielders every time they misfielded or not put enough effort into their dive.

Actually when Sania Mirza was playing tennis i explained the game to her and she understood it so easily and started following tennis too. Needless to say she cursed sania mirza the whole match. She always used to ask me when are the next cricket and tennis matches. I feel she had a natural liking for sports. I really miss her. God bless her soul.

Most of them don't.....but when I went to Pakistan vs England (ODI at Edgbaston in 2006) there was a hot Pakistani balle there who knew everything about our team, about cricket and was a true cricket fan. Sadly she was taken and ironically her bf was the complete opposite. He didn't even know what cricket was.

maybe she got tired of guys talking to her only about cricket and treating her like one of the guys.

Almost every white female in South Africa takes interest in cricket. They are crazy about cricket and cricketers and our cricketers are lucky to get the most beautiful girls in oour country.

Even ugly Hershelle Gibbs managed to marry a real beauty , Tenielle

The chance of a woman actually 'staying up' for an entire test match is almost as impossible as Shoaib Malik scoring 800 runs in this tri-series

Asking a woman to watch an ODI is almost as impossible as asking Shoaib Malik to make 400 runs in this tri-series whilst also taking 20 wickets in this tri-series

Asking a woman to watch 20/20 is possible and Shoaib Malik is likely to score 60 runs whilst only talking 2 wickets....

Mrs Saj absolutely hates the game, doesnt follow the game, doesnt watch the game and has no intention of finding anything out about the game.

I was at a friends house a few weeks ago and his Mrs reckoned she knew a lot about the game. It was frankly embarassing when she was going on about how Inzy should now retire and give someone else a chance to be captain. I just sat and nodded and couldnt be bothered to correct her

It wasn't an intentional blast at Malik, just tried to make a clever analogy with women/cricket and Shoaib Malik...

I thought it was articulated quite brilliantly, if you don't like it that is your problem, but, I hope I am allowed to 'air my views' on a forum I think I am part of...

completely agree .....!

I have met so many cricket fans (men) who dont understand lbw rules , my dad for eg ....my aunt (dads sister ) & lot of my gurl cousins understand cricket much better than my dad who thinks he knows every thing about the game ......strangely among my friends the gurls probabaly take more interest in cricket than the guys who are more into motorsports , basketball & soccer !

I know, I've had that.

I was in Pakistan last summer at my uncle-in-law's house and all the males were watching the England v India match. An LBW appeal that was pitched outside the line gets rightfully turned down; my uncle-in-law starts bellowing at the T.V about how it was clearly out as it would've gone on to hit the stumps.

I didn't have the balls to correct him.

Answer to the question: No!! Are you crazy? Women and appreciating cricket? Just the thought is laughable. The only reason they would sit down for a match is to get a glimpse of the cricketer they find handsome and all, they couldn't careless for cricket. If they find some time after all their shopping, talking, and putting on makeup, maybe they will see the true spirit of the game. However that is as likely as Shoaib Akthar being praised by Monsee, DNA being praised by W63, and Malik being praised by a few others.

ive generally been into sports since i was a little kid i use 2look forward 2sports day that only came once a year in primary school, but cricket kicked in me since highschool it was just amazing to learn such a different game, and now that ive stopped playing it ive gotten more deeper into the art of the game,

i do agree that say around 80% of girls at present wont like or watch cricket unless they've got someone to drool over and talk about but the 20% including me actually stay up and watch a whole test series even if it starts at 4am UK time (i get shouted at from my mum and brothers for being an idiot to wake up at 4am to watch a match) but its a passion built in and i cant and wont get rid of it (the girls that do follow it as a passion will truly be passionate about it) but its not as common as you would think it be

i mean my family hated the fact that i was into sports, i dress like a female, i do girly stuff but that dont mean i cant follow a sport which seems 2be male-dominated, i think cricket will be one sport that men will continue to dominate in

when i was in pak last yr, the world cup was on around then, i noticed my cousins would only watch the matches when afridi or imran nazir/salman butt etc would appear on tv but other than that i couldnt even get into a proper discussion with them about the match instead id have 2talk 2the male cousins who were quite shocked that i knew so much

even my mum recently took a quick interest in cricket to see what was so amazing that id be awake at 4am however that didnt last too well since we lost in the final T20 WC she lost it totally and has diverted her attention to politics

i think girls that follow cricket at present differ from those who watched the 90s team back in them days.... times have changed now, i have no friends who actually like cricket for obvious reasons but that doesnt stop me from supporting my nation and players

Good Luck!

But i would like to add something. My mom was actually very interested in cricket, and she knew all the names of the players in the Pakistani team when she used to watch. She stopped watching it in the late 80s or early 90s. In fact, a lot of women watch cricket and know the players, the team who we are going to play next and so forth. However they are not as crazy about it as some of us are, but it would be unfair to say that they do not appreciate cricket.

Of course we do, ridiculous question. A young female on another forum is excellent with cricket statistical knowledge (she's not Pakistani, however).

Cricket doesn't appeal to much of the 'gruffer' sex - football is the major world sport is it not?

Isn't volleyball more popular than that in other countries, or is it female beach volleyball!

I don't 'vote with my pretty chaplis' - no man is worth a tear in the delicate leather!!!!

However, I do vote with my 'behind on seats' at cricket gounds. When was the last time the men on this forum attended a cricket match???

Okay, mine was a county game, but it was still cricket: Middlesex (lost) vs Surrey, Lords, May 5th -? (or that Sunday before the first Bank Holiday in May).
