US Open 2008

No!! I am not talking about the open which is in NY (tennis). This is the real US open. This year at Torrey Pines.

Woods on comeback trail. He had a knee surgery and will start back at a major. US Opens' recently had not favored the players. The last two champions posted 5 over. Ogilvy won without posting a below par score in all four days in 2006.

Woods have two things going for him. He won on this course in January. he won his first tournament from an earlier knee operation. However, the course has been changed a lot. The rough has higher grass, the greens are fast and hard. Poor Hefty will be paired with Woods and Adam Scott in the first two rounds.

Cabrerra is the defending champion. Since 2001, 5 of the 7 champions are foreigners (Non US). Only Tiger and Furyk won in 02 and 03. Gooson (SA) won twice, Michael Campbell (NZ), Cabrerra (Argentina), Ogilvy (Aus) are the other champions. Ernie (SA) has two US open also.

I think Garcia's game is poised to win one of the majors this year. Unless Tiger brings his B game in the remaining three majors.

Woods allays US Open fitness fear

from bbc.co.uk/sport

Quote:
Tiger Woods says he will be ready for Thursday's US Open as he continues his recovery from a knee operation.

Woods had knee surgery almost two months ago and has yet to play a competitive round since the operation.

But he said: "I'm good to go. Come game time on Thursday I'll be ready. It's a matter of now getting the feel of playing again.

"Is it fully recovered? Probably not, but it's no big deal. I've won tournaments like that before."

The operation is the third Woods has had on his left knee but he insisted his comeback was progressing smoothly, if slowly.

"I've been around an entire 18, but only as part of a corporate outing," said the world number one.

"I've been practising quite a bit. I've just started to play some holes. I've been kind of slowly building up towards that. I'm not trying to take it too hard.

"My practice sessions have increased. They have gotten a little bit more intense. I've been out there for longer duration and everything's been holding up well, which is a good sign."

Woods, who won his first tournament back after knee surgery in December 2002, admitted he was eager to return to action as soon as possible.

"It's obviously been a while since I've played competitively and I'm really looking forward to getting out there and mixing it up with the guys," he said. "I really do miss being in that competitive environment. The atmosphere in general, I do miss it."

The 2008 US Open will take place at Torrey Pines in San Diego from 12-15 June.

Fit-again Woods eyes US Open win

from bbc.co.uk/sport
Quote:
Tiger Woods will start as favourite for the 108th US Open which starts in San Diego on Thursday, despite not playing a competitive round for two months.

The world number one, who has been recovering from knee surgery, is chasing a 14th major title and a fifth straight victory at Torrey Pines.

Fellow American Phil Mickelson, ranked second, has also tasted success at the southern Californian venue.

Sergio Garcia and Ireland's Padraig Harrington are the form Europeans.

Argentine Angel Cabrera is the defending champion, while among the British challengers is Luke Donald, who has twice finished runner-up at the Buick Invitational, the PGA tournament which is held at the Torrey Pines course near San Diego each January.

Donald finished tied for sixth at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio at the beginning of June, while fellow Englishman Justin Rose, the world number six, was tied for second.

Woods, who won the US Open in 2000 and 2002, has had three operations on his left knee but he insisted his comeback was progressing smoothly, if slowly.

"I'm good to go," said the 32-year-old, who won his first tournament back after knee surgery in December 2002.

"Come game time on Thursday I'll be ready. It's a matter of now getting the feel of playing again.

"Is it fully recovered? Probably not, but it's no big deal. I've won tournaments like that before."

Woods, who was second at the Masters in April in his last tournament before the operation, has won six Buick Invitationals at Torrey Pines, including the last four.

Left-hander Mickelson, who will play with Woods and Australia's world number three Adam Scott for the first two rounds, has won three.

Mickelson called Torrey Pines "the best set-up I've ever seen for a US Open", and he also believes the 7,643-yard, par-71 South Course is ideally suited to his game.

"What I love about this week is that short game will be a factor," said Mickelson, winner of three major championships.

"A skillful player around the greens can get the ball close. I think that making short game a factor is advantageous to me, it gives me a better opportunity to get into contention."

Cabrera is bidding to become the first man to retain the US Open title since Curtis Strange in 1989, but is far from happy with his form on the greens coming into the tournament.

"I'm having a rough time with my putting right now," said Cabrera. "I have two putters, the one I used last year at Oakmont and a new one."

No European has won the event since England's Tony Jacklin in 1970, but Garcia, who won the high-profile Players Championship in May, and Open champion Harrington will both feel confident.

Harrington also finished fifth at the Masters, while both men finished tied for fourth at last week's St Jude Championship in Memphis.

Another man to have triumphed at Torrey Pines is Masters champion Trevor Immelman of South Africa, who won the US Amateur Public Links championship in 1998.

However, Immelman said the course had changed beyond recognition and that it would, like most major venues, favour long hitters.

"We all know it's a lot longer [it was lengthened by 500 yards in 2001]," said Immelman. "And the greens are a lot more severe and undulating and there are a lot more plateaus.

"Make no mistake, this is a seriously difficult golf course, but it has been fairly set up."

American Jim Furyk, who has finished as runner-up by a stroke in the last two US Opens, is not a fan of the venue and only played the Buick event this year to familiarise himself with the course.

But the world number 10 hopes Torrey Pines in summer conditions might suit his game better.

"I think it's no secret that if I really loved this place and loved the golf course, I'd probably play the Buick a lot more often than I do," said Furyk, 38, who won his only major, the US Open, at Olympia Fields five years ago.

"But in order to win at the US Open, you're going to have to drive the ball in the fairway and knock some putts in. That's been the strength of my game for a lot of years."

English amateur Gary Wolstenholme received his slot on the eve of the tournament after American Sean O'Hair withdrew because of a pulled chest muscle.

The 47-year-old Wolstenholme was the last player to beat Woods when he was an amateur, winning a singles match on the first day of the 1995 Walker Cup.

Woods is actually 4 shots behind on +1 after shooting a 72

The leaders (Hicks and Streelman) are on -3 after shooting a 68

Still tho 4 shots is well within Tigers range BUT i think his knee is still a little uncomfortable

Not a good start BUT what a finish

Quote:
Tiger Woods fired two eagles in his last six holes to carry a one-stroke lead over England's Lee Westwood into the final day of the US Open.

All of Woods's previous 13 major wins have come when he was leading going into the final round.

Woods, 32, carded a one-under 70 for three under overall while Westwood missed a birdie putt at the last for a 70 and a two-under total of 211.

Westwood is aiming to become the first British US Open winner since 1970.

The 35-year-old is hoping to clinch a maiden major title at Torrey Pines and emulate the feat of countryman Tony Jacklin 38 years ago.

Long-time third-round leader Rocco Mediate of America will begin one stroke further back with Australia's 2006 US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy and American DJ Trahan another shot adrift.

But the history books show that Woods has never failed to clinch a major when holding at least a share of the lead ahead of the final round.

And at times his golf on Saturday suggested there was a higher presence at work.

Woods began one shot off the pace of Australian Stuart Appleby and immediately made a double-bogey on the 1st.

He dropped another shot on the 4th and, though he regained it at the 7th, he was fighting some wayward driving and a left knee which was giving him increasing problems following a two-month lay-off after surgery.

The first sign of the brilliance to come was an eagle three, courtesy of a monster 60ft putt at the 13th after an errant drive into the rough.

A bogey followed after yet another poor drive and he crouched to clutch his knee on the 15th tee before soldiering on to card a couple of pars.

But he chipped in for a birdie from the rough surrounding the green on the 17th and drained another lengthy effort for an eagle three on the 18th to overhaul Westwood.

"I was just trying to get back to even par, somehow," he said.

"I felt that would be somewhere near the lead. All of a sudden some pretty cool things started happening."

Westwood, up ahead, withstood the pressure of "moving day" to edge coolly pass Mediate, who led by as much as three shots at four under at one point.

Afterwards, the Englishman insisted he was unfazed about playing alongside Woods in the final pairing on Sunday, despite plenty of his peers wilting in the spotlight over the years.

"It's what I spend so long on the range for," said Westwood, whose best US Open finish was tied for fifth in 2000.

"My goal at the start of the week was to get into contention and I've done that. I had a lot of inner calm and I was very patient.

"I've played against Tiger loads of times, especially in Ryder Cups, and you're not going to get more highly pressurised than that.

"If you let it get to you, then you have problems. But I'm a fairly calm person and fairly level-headed, so I'll just stick to my own game plan and try to keep doing the things I'm doing."

Westwood, who plummeted from fourth in the world rankings into the 200s during a prolonged slump, is now back up to number 20.

He has won 29 tournaments around the globe and just once on the US PGA Tour. "So I've proven I can win," he said.

Woods added: "We're going to have a lot of fun out there."

In-form Europeans Robert Karlsson of Sweden and Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain will start five shots adrift alongside Australian Robert Allenby, American Hunter Mahan and Colombia's Camilo Villegas.

And two-time champion Ernie Els of South Africa, former Masters champion Mike Weir of Canada and Spain's Sergio Garcia have an outside chance at three over.

But second-round leader Appleby slid away after a round of 79, England's Luke Donald disappeared after a 77 and San Diego local and world number two Phil Mickelson ran up a quadruple-bogey nine at the long 13th and ended nine over to destroy his challenge.

He's been hobbling around. If you look at the replays, hes in agony after he strikes his tee shots.

I am not watching but listening to crap of GEO's self promotion. in middle they show something like news. I am guessing in 25 minute they might show some documentary dubbed in Urdu. Yesterday it was about sea life. Right now they are interviewing Maliha Lodhi (ex ambassodor to USA and UK)

1 Mediate US -2 14
2 Woods US -1 13
3 Trahan US +1 14
3 Westwood Eng +1 13
5 Ogilvy Aus +2 14

but
American veteran Rocco Mediate lets slip his one-shot lead and drops back to join Tiger Woods as the final round of the US Open nears its climax.

Mediate, 45, bogeys the 15th to slide to one under with Lee Westwood two back after a birdie on the 14th.

Woods and Westwood on the last hole

Both of them need a birdie to match Mediate and to take it into a play off - an eagle will win it. Tiger eagled this hole yesterday, lets see what he can do now

I'm sorry, this deserves another post.

Just before the putt, after Tiger had sized up the shot, he went up to approach the ball but paused before he got there. He stood at the spot for a good 5-10 seconds staring and the ball/line/hole. It was like he was watching himself make the putt.

Before that moment I was still holding out hope that he would miss the putt. But after that, there was no issue.

Why dont they have 4 playoff holes immediately (I'm sure that happens with the other events)

Bit of an anticlimax .

Its basically 'matchplay' from here.

Cant see Woods slipping up.

Yeah thats what happened in The Open with Garcia and Harrington having a 4 hole play off

Personally im glad it is happening today, was knackered and needed sleep - 4 more holes would have been too long

Both players have dropped a shot.

After 5 holes, they are both on +1

Never heard of Mediate - but he seems very laid back from the interviews he gave last night.

I want Rocco to win it!
