Malik fails to give credit to Misbah: Win against India in Asia Cup

Malik fails to give credit to Misbah: Win against India in Asia Cup

By Our Correspondent
KARACHI, July 26: Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik, speaking to a private television channel on Friday, insisted that although his deputy Misbah-ul-Haq led Pakistan to a grand win over India in an Asia Cup round match early this month, it was he (Malik) who selected the playing eleven for the key clash.

Malik sat out that crucial game on July 2 due to exhaustion and dehydration and Misbah, making the most of the opportunity, brought back an otherwise down-and-out Pakistan into the Asia Cup with a strong display of captaincy.

Pakistan outplayed a star-studded India on that sultry day by successfully chasing a 300-plus score for the loss of just two wickets with Younis Khan scoring a superb hundred and backed well by fine half centuries from Misbah himself and young opener Nasir Jamshed.

Answering a question regarding the aggressive leadership style of Misbah compared to his own defensive one, a weary-looking Malik told the channel that there wasn’t anything great about Misbah leading Pakistan to victory in the Karachi game since the selection of the playing eleven on that day was done by him which clicked famously.

As per the PCB rules, only the selection committee has the right to select the final playing eleven in a home series game which, in effect, defeats Malik’s claims of selecting the squad against Dhoni’s men in that crucial tie.

Malik has come under lot of criticism from former skippers Wasim Akram, Aamir Sohail and Ramiz Raja for his lacklustre captaincy and defensive approach during his year-long tenure at the helm.

The experts also feel that he has failed in motivating the players in crucial matches and — with his recent mediocre performance with both bat and ball, he hardly deserves a place in the squad.

comments: Hold on Skipper, didnt you say that the selection commitee selected the team not the skipper? I knew he was going to let his guard down eventually. As far as his comments on Misbah's captaincy is concerned, typical loserish and jealous stuff.

Emm, what?

Too much nonsense is made out of this aggressive/defensive captiancy.

In reality, its pretty simple:

If you bowling attack = :younis

Then any captian can attack.

Absolutely correct I was about to post the same. No quotes directly attributed to Malik. Another bs article, shame it's from Pakistani media.

'Our Correspondent' has not even been brave enough to put his name to the article.

Either this is masala news or Malik has no idea what he is talking about. Here are the two team - that lost and then won the ODIs vs Indian in Asia Cup;
Lost on Jun 26th Won on July 2nd Salman Butt Salman Butt Shoaib Malik Nasir Jamshed Younis Khan Younis Khan Mohammad Yousuf Mohammad Yousuf Misbah-ul-Haq Misbah-ul-Haq Shahid Afridi Shahid Afridi Sohail Tanvir Sohail Tanvir Fawad Alam Saeed Ajmal Sarfraz Ahmed Sarfraz Ahmed Umar Gul Abdur Rauf Iftikhar Anjum Iftikhar Anjum
There were three changes:
Nasir for Malik:
Forced change due to injury. If this change/selection won the game for Pak, then Malik better keep himself out of the team.

Rauf for Gul:
Again forced change due to injury. Again, if it was team selection then why didn't Malik play Gul in the first game. Plus Rauf went for 66 runs in the his over in the win - 2nd worse Economy rate that day.

Saeed for Fawad:
This was the only "tactical" change that paid off.... so, did this selection (by Malik) won us the game?.............. but then why Saeed did not play in the 1st ODI vs India when Malik was fully in-charge?

That depends on which side of the fence you're standing on. The anti-Malik brigade will/already have in some cases voiced their opinions on what amounts to nothing more than junk.

Thanks for the detailed analysis, don't think it's needed this time.

To be fair to Malik, he did say at the interview after the first match that we needed an off-spinner - which got a lot of abuse for.

In the second match, the only optional change made was the inclusion of the spinner.

Malik is a bigger idiot than he gives himself credit for - So he's here admitting he picked a winning combination - and that combination does not include him. Great!! I'll take that!

Could he make sure he does that in every game from now on?

Tell you what, I'd rather believe an unquoted article from Dawn. They have quite a decent reputation when it comes to journalism in Pakistan.

The news article however says that Malik said these things in a TV interview. Did someone watch the interview and on which channel was it on ?

There was a writer in DAWN who was posting things during Woolmer time which Woolmer had to come and say No to. They might have some reputation but in hot market of cricket who knows.

Did Malik say these thing, it can be possible but there would have been quite a few articles about it as it came on TV
