Ganguly still hopeful of Test comeback (Australian Test series)

Even as the Australian cricket team is getting ready to fly out to India, Sourav Ganguly, overlooked for the Irani Trophy tie, is on a comeback trail.

The former India captain looked to be in a positive frame of mind when asked about his comeback plans by the media.

"I have come here to play matches. It is raining in Kolkata and conditions are bad," he told reporters.

Ganguly, who was ignored for the Rest of India team that plays Delhi, arrived in Chandigarh to play in the JP Attray club tournament.

Ganguly was optimistic that he would be named in the home Test series against Australia starting from October 9.

"The team has not been announced and I played in the last Test (against Sri Lanka)," he pointed out.

Ganguly will turn out for the LIC club team in this tournament that is likely to also feature the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh.

Ganguly defended his decision to turn out at a club-level event in order to secure his place in the national team.

"Matches have to be played. It is raining in Kolkata," Ganguly said.

Speaking earlier to the Indian Express, Ganguly had explained it was important to have match practice as nets alone would not be enough.

If someone from the "Fab Four" has to be dropped, I think it should be Dravid.

I think its too early to say he is finished. He scored a double century against Pakistan and made a match winning contribution with the bat against SA in third test. One bad series doesn't mean he is finished.

But the problem is that the selectors slowly want to phase out the senior players, barring Tendulkar. According to many media reports, Ganguly is the first target of the selectors among the seniors.

Ganguly has been a great batsman but now its time to hang the shoes, at 36, how much more you wanna play, make a room for so many aspiring youngsters and devote yourself for the improvement of cricket.

I think he can still play, at least the upcoming Australia series.
