Yasir Arafat signs for Sussex

Paceman Arafat returns to Sussex

Arafat helped Kent reach two one-day finals last season

Sussex have signed Pakistani fast bowler Yasir Arafat, 26, as their overseas player for the 2009 season.

Arafat, who played for Kent last term, returns to Hove for a second season after featuring prominently in the county's double success of 2006.

Mark Robinson, Sussex's professional cricket manager, said: "Yasir's signing is fantastic news and we are flattered that he is keen to return to Hove.

"It's further evidence that players fall in love with the club."

Robinson added: "He's not only an outstanding new and old ball bowler, but a fantastic lower-middle order batsman, who should stand out in both our four and one-day cricket."

Arafat had impressive figures last season at Kent, despite the county suffering relegation in the Championship.

He took 38 first-class wickets in 12 games at an average of 29.07 and was Kent's leading wicket-taker in both one-day and Twenty20 cricket as they reached the Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup finals.

If he continues to be ignored then I don't think he has much choice.

What can he do ? He never gets selected. He is worth a place in the pak squad but never makes it !

I can see him playing in the ICL in 3 years time if PAK keeps ignoring him . . .

Yes I knew that Yasir was in discussions with Sussex, but he was waiting to see what sort of deal, if any Kent offered him.

Former Kent overseas player, Yasir Arafat, has rejoined Sussex for the 2009 season.

The Pakistani returns to Hove for a second spell after featuring prominently in their double success of 2006.

Arafat enjoyed a good season in 2008 with Kent. He took 38 first-class wickets in 12 games at an average of 29.07 and was the leading wicket-taker in both one-day and Twenty20 cricket helping Kent to reach the Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 Cup finals.

However, because of other commitments, Yasir will not be available for the whole of 2009 and this was a key factor in Kent’s decision not to re-sign him.

Chief Executive Paul Millman said: “I would like to thank Yasir for the contribution he made whilst with Kent. It is becoming increasingly difficult to sign overseas cricketers for a whole season but we are actively looking to bring in a talented player who fits that criteria as Yasir is unable to do so.”

Yeah, I think Kent didn't sign him because of his IPL commitments.

Would like this lad to be given a chance for Pak. Always impresses me and is the closest thing to a fast bowling all rounder that we have.
