Manny Pacquaio V De La Hoya

Anyone watching the 24-7 programme on Sky? Gotta say both look in superb shape. Initially I thought the weight difference may be too much, but the more I watch of the build up, the more I'm convinced Manny's gonna do it!!

I'm cheering for Pacman the Destroyer! It will be an awesome fight but I think Manny's in the prime of his career and Oscar's a bit past it.

Pound for pound Manny is on another level to an ageing De La Hoya. He's at the top of his game, while DLH is on his way down. However, the discrepancy in weight is what makes the match so intriguing.

The fight will be at 147 pounds! Manny is not going up just one weight class, it's two! And in reality it's almost 3 weight classes!! Because he's only had ONE fight at 135 pounds. All his previous fights were at 130 or under - and if anyone remembers he started his career off at 106/107 pounds (Flyweight)!

Now can he carry the power through to 147. Will his power make any impact on De La Hoya who has fought against some heavy punchers even beyond 147 pounds? Will manny be able to take the bombs of a 147 pound fighter considering he's accustomed to taking punches from 130-135 pound fighters because one thing's for certain, Oscar can still bang. Will Manny lose speed as a result of the bulking up?? These are the questions that leave this an open contest. In fact the smart money is on DLH.

Look how much Hatton's camp whinged about him going up ONE weight class against Collazo and Mayweather? 3 weight classes is no joke. No matter how much people deny it, it will make a big diference.

People point to Roy Jones moving up 2 weight classes to win the Heavyweight Belt Vs John Ruiz. But you have to remember, Ruiz was an extremely limited fighter. Oscar, even despite the age and all the wars is still a very clever and polished fighter.

But to be honest, I for some reason believe Manny is just that good that he will triumph. I'm with you Pacman all the way!!!

It's PPV in USA. but if you don't follow this thread and avoid sports news like BBC sports home page then it is easy. Watch it next weekend without knowing the results. You probably want to miss few minutes of the starting broadcast when they show it on HBO as they can say the result. I have seen many fights this way and I didn't have to avoid much but was disappointed 2-3 times when HBO when showing on their channel said who won at start of coverage.
It was easier for me as not many people talk about it at work and I didn't really watch sports news. The way it is now for me if I don't see a thread here about a big boxing match I wouldn't even know about it

It's on Sky Box Office. Like a mug, I'll have to get it. I think you get the Aamir Khan fight in the same package too. Unbelievable that they've made Amir Khan a PPV fighter in this country. I mean I want him to do well, but this is too much too soon.

Manny is obviously the better P4P Boxer. But DLH is fighting alot close to his ideal weight than Pac. Pac may struggle. Pac figts at a much lower weight,

DLH has seen better days, but he should take this

I'm pretty excited about this - I don't think I've been this excited about a fight since Evander fought Iron Mike. Kostya Tsyzu vs Sharmba Mitchell was close, but this is going to be hawt!

About expected for Pacman, but de la hoya coming in 2 lb under is a bit of a surprise.

Manileños to see Pacquiao-de la Hoya fight for free

TWENTY thousand boxing fans in Manila will get a chance to see the much-awaited Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and Mexican fighter Oscar de la Hoya on the big screen and for free.

This after, the Manila City Government is offering a free showing of the boxing bout on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the Tondo Sports Complex (District I), Patricia Sports Complex (District II), Rasac covered court (District III), Dapitan Sports Complex (District IV), San Andres Sports Complex (District V), and the Teresa covered court (District VI).

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim said those who have tickets that were previously distributed by the City Government will have priority admission into the complexes. The sites will be open to admit expectators as early as 8 a.m.

The local government will likewise assign marshals to man the entry of the sports complexes to ensure that there will be no overcrowding, shoving, or chaos.

Aside from the said complexes, the City Government will also use the Ninoy Aquino stadium since it can accommodate a larger number of people at approximately 5,000.

The accommodation in the venue however will be on a first-come, first-served basis. (FP/Sunnex)

If the fight was NOW, I'd be watching - but I guess the cable companies will scramble the signal prior to the PPV event starting.

If the winner if fighting Hatton - then I want the man that is most capable of retiring HAtton to win!!!

And I believe that man is Manny Pacquaio.

Is it a 4am UK kick off?

I hope Amir Khan does well - needs to put up a positive show

Macaranelli - no idea who he is fighting now, opponent keeps changing BUT he also needs to put on a positive show after Haye sparked him clean

I HATE Audrey Harrison, i hope that Rogan smashes up him

I feel sorry for Oscar - he's been an epic fighter for so long but he was made to look second rate by Manny. This bloke is seriously one of the best fighters going around atm, his hand speed and foot speed is amazing.

Pacquiao turns 'dream fight' into nightmare for De La Hoya

Atlas Breaks Down Pacquiao's TKO Of De La Hoya

LAS VEGAS -- The end for Oscar De La Hoya on this night came as he sat in the corner after the eighth round, his left eye swollen shut and his face bruised by punches Manny Pacquiao seemed able to land almost at will.

The decision to call it a night was easy. The decision to call it a career may be a lot tougher.

"My heart still wants to fight, that's for sure," De La Hoya said. "But when your physical doesn't respond, what can you do? I have to be smart and make sure I think about my future plans."

Pacquiao gave De La Hoya a lot to think about by beating and battering him around the ring for eight rounds Saturday night before De La Hoya declined to answer the bell for the ninth round. The domination was shocking enough, but the fact that it came at the hands of a fighter who just nine months earlier had been fighting at 129 pounds had to be even more troubling for De La Hoya and his legions of fans.

De La Hoya absorbed such a beating that he was taken to a hospital afterwards for what was described as a precautionary examination. The most popular fighter of his generation won just one round on one ringside scorecard and none on the other two against a smaller opponent who fought bigger than him from the opening bell on.

Packing A Punch

The magnificent Manny Pacquiao displayed his prowess in many ways during Saturday night's defeat of Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas. But maybe his most impressive performance was in the power-punching category. Here's a look at the numbers:
Power Punch Stats De La Hoya Pacquiao
Landed 51 195
Thrown 164 333
Percent 31 59

"We knew we had him after the first round," Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. "He had no legs, he was hesitant and he was shot."

Roach trained De La Hoya in his last big fight a year ago and said then that De La Hoya simply couldn't throw punches when he needed to anymore. That was magnified even more against Pacquiao, who not only was as elusive as Floyd Mayweather Jr. but threw punches back that kept De La Hoya off pace.

"Freddie, you're right," De La Hoya told the trainer after the fight. "I just don't have it anymore."

If De La Hoya's career is over, it will be the end of a remarkable story that began when he won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona in 1992 and went on to become the biggest box office attraction in the sport. But while he sold tickets, De La Hoya hadn't won a big fight in six years, and there were whispers long before the fight that he had nothing left.

He certainly had nothing against Pacquiao, who fought a lot bigger than he looked and who proved that speed was a lot more important than size against a fighter who at the age of 35 has seen his better days.

"That's what we were focused on every day in the gym, speed, speed would be the key to this fight," Pacquiao said. "I trained hard for this fight, and that's why I deserve tonight."

De La Hoya's left eye was swollen shut as he sat on his stool after the eighth round and the ring doctor, referee and his cornermen discussed his condition. De La Hoya offered no complaints when his corner decided he had enough, getting up from his stool and walking to the center of the ring to congratulate the victor.

Manny Pacquiao celebrates his comprehensive, eighth-round defeat of an overmatched Oscar De La Hoya in Las Vegas.

"You're still my idol," Pacquiao told him.

"No, you're my idol," De La Hoya said.

It was lopsided from the beginning, with Pacquiao landing punch after punch while De La Hoya chased after him, trying to catch him with a big blow. Pacquiao was winning big even before the seventh round, when he was pounding De La Hoya against the ropes in his corner and catching him with huge shots that knocked him across the ring.

De La Hoya remained upright, but with one eye closed and his reflexes seemingly gone there was no chance he was going to land the big punches he would have needed to turn the fight around. Ringside statistics showed Pacquiao landed 45 power punches in the seventh round to just four for De La Hoya.

"He's just a great fighter," De La Hoya said. "I have nothing bad to say about him. He prepared like a true champion."

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) came up two weight classes to fight for his biggest purse ever, while De La Hoya dropped down to meet him at 147 pounds. Though De La Hoya (39-6) towered over Pacquiao and had a big reach advantage over him, Pacquiao had no trouble getting inside what few jabs De La Hoya threw to land his shots.

Pacquiao was credited with landing 224 of 585 punches to just 83 of 402 for De La Hoya.

De La Hoya not only dropped down to fight for the first time at 147 pounds in seven years, but actually came into the ring unofficially weighing less than Pacquiao. Both fighters got on scales in their dressing rooms and De La Hoya was 147 while Pacquiao was 148 and a half.

Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $11 million, while De La Hoya was expected to make at least twice that by the time all the pay-per-view revenues are totaled up.

Oscar looked hopeless. Him and his corner knew that he couldn't touch Pacquiao...sad to see him sitting all quietly while his trainer asked him if he should stop the fight.

I don't think Hatton would do that well against Pacman either.

Now that was as one side a fight as you will ever seen - I started feeling sorry for ODLH after the 4th round - he wasnt throwing any punches.

Legs were rooted to the ring - and he was getting caught from Manny - some devestating 4-5 punch combinations at pace.

It was one fight too many for ODLH - a legend that needs to call it quits to avoid being beat up seriously by someone else.

Some of Manny's punches were ferocious - leaning in with full momentum, virtually of his feet when he connected! It was worrying that ODLH didnt throw a punch in the 7th/8th round - yet took severe punishment.

Ref should have stopped it 1 round previous - but when ODLH is running the show, must have made the ref think twice.

It messes future planning up though.

Hatton v de la Hoya would have filled Wembley or the Millenium Stadium - and sold bucket loads on PPV.

Not sure Manny v Ricky will do that - but if it happens, I hope Manny retires HAtton!

Awesome, awesome performance from manny! As punch perfect as you will see. Admittedly Oscar isn't the fighter he once was, but manny's movement and that straight left would have given him serious problems even in his prime.

I had started to believe manny would do it more and more leading up to the fight, but that performance was phenomenal! He looked comfortable and strong at the weight, and the speed was still there. He just continues to impress and his accuracy was scary!

106 to 147. In my eyes he's already a legend.

Hatton's gonna get smashed and even he knows it. He'll turn up for a big payday and a beating! If it's at wembley, I'm going!

This was not the main news on BBC boxing yesterday. The main was about Froch followed by Paqman. Then earlier today it was Froch followed by Amir Khan with the big fight moved to the right. And now It is Calzaghe to retire followed by Amir Khan
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/default.stm

Paqman does get a special article for a fight against Hatton
