Depends on your budget... I am not a great big fan of Nikon in digital tech, red eye reduction is pretty ordinary. Canon is good but the best of the best I have used so far is SONY DSC series, it also has the best reviews on various websites, and if u could wait till another month.. a new generation "Mega zooms" is on its way in compact camera ... Look for Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 in April 09, it has 20 X Optical and unbelievable 28 mm to 560 mm in the same compact size. Totally mind boggling stuff at $500.00

Here are some owners opinions on the camera from dpreview ...

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read...y=nikon_cps560

I suggest you look around on the website (www.dpreview.com) and look in the camera databases and forums. Lots of info.

You would need to make a choice between a compact camera that has average zoom capabilities (3x or 4x) and one that is larger and has much better zoom capabilities. I would go for better zooming.

Best is to go into a camera shop and have a look.

I have a 600mm to 1000mm lens with a 2x converter (i.e. 1200mm to 2000mm) that I use with a DSLR. Only problem is that the lens is manual focus.

1000mm would be my dream lens but I don't think I would be able to afford those.

I have an olympus DSLR and I have a adapter that allows me to use my old Zuiko SLR lenses. I attached my 500mm mirror lens( 850mm) on digital but I don't like the little donut rings of the mirror lens

My brother-in-law overseas picked it up on Ebay as a wedding present. It wasn't a fancy lens as such (Vivitar ... I had never heard of it).

I was able to pick up some decent camera equipment a few years ago. A nice Canon DSLR and some lenses and a few accessories etc. I will admit that I do enjoy packing the rucksack or other camera bags and spending time taking photos.

In general I enjoy wildlife photography the most.

I think carrying those big zoom lenses will prolly become thing of the past when you are about to be exposed to first generation of "mega zooms" (28mm to 650 mm) in a small compact digital camera for the "point to shoot crowd".
truth, you can also look into DSLR in Sony's Alpha series if you are an advanced user.

Thanks Uncle SAM,

I am not in favour of bulky camera, looking for a compact one which is handy for a casual user, if you had come across a compact camera which is good for a casual user pls let me know.

If you don't wanna go for SLR cameras and still want somerthing good then go for this one:

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ15 - 9.1MP 10x Optical Zoom I.A. 28mm 3.0
http://panasonic.com.au/products/det...?objectID=4534

I bought it last year and LOVE it, extremely good result. Very easy to use and 3 inch screen is awesome. 10x optical zoom (9.1 mp) is probably the best you can find in a compact (non SLR) digital camera.

I second that man, it is a great camera, great 10x zoom as compared to most of the sony cameras which have 5 or 6x optical zoom.

^^ I have owned a Canon compact and a DSLr. Not too keen on Samsung brand. If your budget is around $200, then let me suggest this -->
1) http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSho...8503274&sr=1-1
2) http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Powersho...8503377&sr=1-1

Read the reviews.

I just purchased this Lumix GF1 few days ago. I am still in learning mode but so far, I am very happy with the results.

This is the smallest digital SLR ( micro 2/3rd) camera out in the market.

You are not wrong there like - £500 for a digital camera?

As for budget im thinking around the £150 range, maximum £200 - Also would like the camera to have HD recording if possible BUT primarily it has to be good at taking photo's (obviously)

Thanks for your suggestiongs - will look at those in detail in the coming days

are you using other Sony products?
Sony uses propriety memory cards, which means most laptops cant read the memory card directly.

Other than that it got good lens, nice zoom (you don't really need more than 5x optical unless you are into serious photography, never use digital zoom)

check out the ISO range and its abilities in low light before you buy.

Using flash is an art, and flash usually makes photos flat and gives you shadows. So its important to see how low light photo comes out since usually you find using the camera in less than optimum conditions most of the time. That is if your culture is based around evenings.
