Younis defends his habit of smiling in adversity

Link: http://cricket.timesofindia.indiatim...ow/4655845.cms

Pakistan skipper Younis Khan, whose habit of constantly smiling has evoked great criticism at home after his team failed to perform well in the ICC T20 World Cup, has defended his particular habit of laughing even in adversity.

Younis said in an interview from London that he was a simple man who believed in leaving the past behind.

"People misunderstand my smile and laughs. Specially when we are not doing well. They think I am not serious or not committed enough for my country that is not true," Younis said.

"At times people think I am the wrong guy because I'm always laughing even when we lose. This is life. You must go forward and leave what has already happened behind you."

Younis apparently took the criticism to heart after Pakistan had lost to Sri Lanka and were in danger of being knocked out of the World Cup.

Against New Zealand on Saturday he didn't smile even once on the field and was dead serious while field placing and talking to his bowlers.

"I don't want people to think I am not trying hard enough. Some of my well wishers have told me that I need to feel like the people feel when our team does not well," he said.

There have been many conspiracy theories behind Pakistan's unimpressive run in the tournament but Younis insists all is well in the camp although the players are worried about the militant activities back home.

"There was a bomb in Peshawar, that's my hometown on the day we played Sri Lanka. You think about what's happening in Pakistan. You are a human being and it is affecting our performances as well," he stressed.

Younis also faced questions over his inclusion in the T20 side but he has silenced his critics by being Pakistan's main scorer in the ongoing tournament.

He has been prolific with the bat having scored an unbeaten 46 against England, 36 against the Netherlands and a brisk 50 against Sri Lanka.

Younis also preferred to play down the statement of former chief selector, Abdul Qadir that Younis would not have been in his T20 team if he had been allowed to do the selection independently.

"I think my own performances in this tournament is a good enough answer to what Qadir has said. I don't know why there were no problems between us when he was chief selector. We rarely spoke to each other," he added.

I agree. He is not smiling because the team is performing badly, he is smiling to have a good influence on the younger players. I feel sorry for the cricketers- hard for a team to perform well when their country is being blown up my the militants. That's not an excuse , it's a fact. A lot of people not living in Pakistan would fail to understand it but the bombings and all are affecting our everyday life and mindset. I like the fact that he smiles and hopes he continues to do so.

I completely understand where Younus is coming from. Most of my family lives in Pakistan, Lahore.

Whenever we hear that a bomb went off we ring back home to check that everyone is ok and that no one from our family was in that vicinity.

If We, who don't see our families for an year or two can worry so much then it must be really difficult for the cricketers who always go back to their family and live there.

Smiling is not issue but him being stupid sometimes. When Pakistan lost to England, Younus brought the discussion of 'for fun' part role to increase the matter even worse. Younus Khan needs to learn to make proper comment according to the situation.

He wasn't smiling when someone said in Airport after the WC 07 that make sure to get him ride by donkey. That surely has changed Younus Khan and Younus Khan somehow has painted the red on his face if that is what i should think? LOL

This reminds me of earlier i have recited the funny dialogue or poetry.

'Jab batsman century banatay hain toh mercedes main lift karadetay hain'
'Jab batsman century banatay hain toh mercedes main lift karadetay hain'

'Jab batsman zero banatay hain toh gaddha main lift karadetay hain'

It really doesn't matter whether he smiles or not

I'm glad I'm not having to defend him like after the England game anymore as he has won over some hearts

I hope pak win this WC InshaAllah.

Pak fans are just so fickle, dont know how and when to back their team. After a few defeats, I read posts here saying sack YK, coz he is a bad captain he smiles too much blah blah. Is this how much cricketing sense pak fans have?

I hope we win the WC, and YK can slap these guys individually

Come'on they are also human beings...cant they smile huh?
n I believe most of his statements have been misunderstood....as somewhere i read that he meant the "for fun" thingie for the fans n not for the players....n I believe that coz all the players r very keen to win doesnt matter which country u belong!

3 brothers, father, coach, so much violence in area from where he hails, so its possible he may have also lost some classmate, childhood fren, neighbour or distant relative too. Agar smile na karta ab tak dil ka daura pad jaata.

younis khan is a real national treasure. true gentleman. conducts himself well on and off the field. level-headed person. could have taken pakistan cricket to great heights.
but sadly, pakistan cricket board has a tradition of shooting themselves in the foot.
