ONLY 3 Indians in ICC's Hall of Fame - Indians Whining AGAIN

Quote:
Only 3 Indians in ICC's hall of fame
June 28th, 2009
PTI

Mumbai: Only three Indian greats, left-arm spin magician Bishen Singh Bedi, prolific opener Sunil Gavaskar and champion all rounder Kapil Dev, have been named by the International Cricket Council in its 55-strong Hall of Famers list, which has 22 Englishmen in it.

The ICC, while announcing Colin Cowdrey as the 19th cricketer to be formally inducted in its elite list of cricket greats, provided the list of persons who have been chosen for the Hall of Fame, but yet to be formally inducted.

The list contains 22 Englishmen, 11 Australians, 13 West Indians, three each from India and Pakistan and two South Africans and a lone New Zealander.

Apparently the list does not contain cricketers who have retired post-1995.

"The Hall of Fame, run in association with the Federation of International Cricketers Associations (FICA), recognises some of the truly great players from crickets long and illustrious history", the ICC said while naming former England captain Cowdrey as its 19th formal inductee.

The world's leading body on cricket, celebrating its centenary year, also said that further cap presentations will be made during the course of the year and a limited number of inductees, in addition to the 55 already chosen, will be named during 2009.

Strangely, none from Sri Lanka was found good enough to make the list though the island nation has won the World Cup, the ICC's showpiece event, in 1996.

Even from among Indian cricketers the list did not include C K Nayudu, Lala Amarnath, Vijay Merchant, Vijay Hazare, Vinoo Mankad, Polly Umrigar, Subash Gupte, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Gundappa Viswanath and Dilip Vengsarkar, to name a few.

From neighbouring Pakistan, only Hanif Mohammed, Imran Khan and Javed Miandad have made the grade. Among the notable absentees was Fazal Mehmood.

The master of swing and cut had brought England to its knees in the Oval Test on Pakistan's very first tour of Old Blighty in 1954 with a haul of 12-99 (6 for 53 and 6 for 46).

The Pakistani pace ace later bowled his country to a famous victory over the mightly Australians at home in their very first encounter in the 1956-57 series at Karachi with a fabulous haul of 13 for 114 in 75 overs.

Even from among the list of Englishmen, Australians and West Indians named so far, there were some glaring omissions.

The ICC had ignored the credentials of Herbert Sutcliffe, Bill Edrich, Maurice Tate, Godfrey Evans, Hedley Verity, Douglas Jardine, Ken Barrington, Ted Dexter and Bob Willis.

Victor Trumper, considered to be the greatest Australian batsman before the advent of Donald Bradman and a master of playing on "stickies", was not in the list.

Also absent were Stan McCabe, Clarrie Grimmett, Bill Ponsford, Arthur Morris, Lindsay Hassett, Bob Simpson, Doug Walters, Graham McEnzie and Alan Davidson.

The list also does not have West Indian spin twins Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine, pace great Wesley Hall, left-handed stylist Alvin Kallicharran and "Big Bird" Joel Garner.

From South Africa only Graeme Pollock and his erstwhile teammate Barry Richards have made it to the list. Legends like Jackie McGlew, Dudley Nourse, Hugh Tayfield, Eddie Barlow and Mike Procter did not make it to the list.

Great all rounder Richard Hadlee was the lone New Zealander in the 55-member club.

The 22 initial inductees from England in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame were Sydney Barnes, Alec Bedser, Ian Botham, Geoffrey Boycott, Denis Compton, Colin Cowdrey, Graham Gooch, David Gower, WG Grace, Tom Graveney, Walter Hammond, Jack Hobbs, Leonard Hutton, Alan Knott, Jim Laker, Harold Larwood, Peter May, Wilfred Rhodes, Brian Statham, Fred Trueman, Derek Underwood and Frank Woolley.

The 11 from Australia were Richie Benaud, Allan Border, Donald Bradman, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Neil Harvey, Dennis Lillee, Ray Lindwall, Rodney Marsh, Keith Miller and Bill O'Reilly.

The 13 West Indies greats inducted were Lance Gibbs, Gordon Greenidge, George Headley, Michael Holding, Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Malcolm Marshall, Vivian Richards, Andy Roberts, Garfield Sobers, Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell.

The three Indians were Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar.

What do they mean by ONLY 3? What did they expect? All 55 players from India? Maaaan -- talking about a whining bunch and talk about being attention hungry. Its like 2 year old who start throwing tantrum, if parents pick up another child in their lap.

We have 3 Pakistani players. Did anybody even notice? Imran even declined invitation to receive his Hall of fame award/cap during Lahore test vs Sri Lanka due to his usy schedule.

So, what do you think about them whiners? How many more Indians do you think should be included in Hall of Fame? I think, every cricketer that wore the Indian cap, should have been included.

Usually I hate these whine fests but I don't blame them this time. 22 englishmen for a team that has never been number one? A lot of legends for team that never had a true great period.

i am surprised why BEDI is in that list....and come on...how many more indians you wnat to put..they dun have a longer cricket history than England and Australia....the west indies had a long cricket history and they ruled the world for 4 decades, so not surprised at that as well...so i think it is a fair call...yes, some Pakistani players should've been there as well, i guess there were only 3. Zaheer Abbas and Fazal Mahmood shud've been there.

By the way Wisdon once published ‘Top 100 innings of all time’ and Tendulker could not be found in even top 100. India protested it so much that I think Wisdon took it out of their web site.

First, I dont see too much whining in this article. If you the basis of your post is simply this source then I am not sure if that imply that INDIANS are whining. Personally, I think the list seems to be fair enough.

One should learn to live with all this rather than complaining everytime. However, Sachin Tendulkar should definitely have been there. Apart from him, at least a few more players from subcontinent should have been included. Come on, we know how for good cricketers England has produced.

Actually the list does not contain players who retired after 1995. I'm sure Sachin, Dravid, Akram, Waqar, etc will be there when their time comes.

Hall of Fame should only be for legends. Greats should not be included in Hall of Fame.

This list is why nobody takes the ICC seriously. 22 Englishmen and 11 Aussies? 3 indians!? You would think that England have dominated world cricket for the past 50 years, when in fact it is one of the only major teams which has never won a world cup - or any major world event.

I believe they won the football world cup sometime in the 60's.

I doubt pure T20 players will be inducted in the HoF for another 30 years if ever. ICC thinks (and I think they are right) that Test >> OD >> T20.

How is that not bad? When we have and continue to produce some of the most exciting and naturally a talented players to grace the game between the two countries? 22 englishmen? Shows that despite the growing influence of the BCCI and the strength of the sub-continent teams in general, the white nature of the ICC has still not gone.
