Breaking news : Murali sets Test retirement date

http://www.cricinfo.com/srilanka/con...ry/417016.html

Muttiah Muralitharan has said he will retire from Test cricket at the end of Sri Lanka's home series against West Indies in November 2010. Speaking at the end of the first ODI against Pakistan, in which he was awarded the Man of the Match, Murali said he will focus on representing his country in one-day cricket until the 2011 World Cup and thereafter will stick to Twenty20 cricket.

Murali, 37, is the world's leading wicket-taker in Test cricket with 770 at 22.18 from 127 Tests. He passed Shane Warne's Test record of 708 wickets against England in December 2007, fittingly on his home ground in Kandy. He achieved the grand double of being the highest wicket-taker in ODIs as well when he went past Wasim Akram's record of 502 wickets in 2009.

Murali made his Test debut against Australia in 1992.

Not sure about next year. But this year they have 5 more tests to go atleast. 2 Against NZ at home immediately after the Pak series. They play India in India at the end of this year. 3 Tests.

Edit: As per the FTP here http://static.cricinfo.com/db/DOWNLO...006_2012_1.pdf
SL play a total of 8 tests till Murali retires (including the 3 tests he plays against WI).

So he might end around 760 test wickets I guess..

Murali announces retirement plans

Quote:
Test cricket's most prolific wicket-taker, Muttiah Muralitharan, plans to retire from test cricket at the end of this year and from all forms of international cricket after the World Cup scheduled for next March.

The 37-year-old Sri Lankan cricketer, who has taken a world-record 792 wickets in 132 Tests, will finally call time on an 18-year career after the West Indies' two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in October. He needs only eight more scalps to become the first and only player to take 800 wickets.

"My future is all about playing one-dayers until the World Cup. If I am fit and good I will play until the World Cup and the World Cup will be the end of the road," he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

He also confirmed that he will play in third edition of the Indian Premier League despite a threat by terror outfit al-Qaeda and also urged his teammates to go and play in India.

Murali is an AMAZING bowler, he will probably end up being the 2nd best spinner of all time (Warne best ever without any doubt).

Agree completely.

Warney brought the art of spin bowling back into cricket.

your opinion, however the majority of people will agree that Warne is no.1.

The reason why i believe that Warne is no.1 is that he could turn a game on its head in a blink of an eye, whereas Murali, although a genius bowler, often lacked this instinct.

What makes Warne stand out even more is his willingness to attack and not worry about going for runs, whereas murali was very concerned about going for runs, which lead him to being more defensive at times.

I normally agree with your comments, as i believe your a really good poster.

However, not with this. A bit childish of you to say that.

Murali is a fantastic bowler, and the number of wickets shows how good he is.

He was unfairly targetted by useless australian umpires such as Hair and emerson, and it seems that Australians in general have had trouble accepting his success.

If he was australian, all i would be hearing right now, would be along with the lines "he was cleared" etc.

How was he unfairly treated. With naked eye he always looks like a big chucker and umpires didn't have ultra vision built in their eyes in 95. Even to this day you watch him bowl at the ground and some of the balls look very dodgy with naked eye...different from Mr. Akhtar though who chucked more and more when he got tired during a spell.

so how come before that no other umpire called him???

Maybe the aussie umpires were bolder and more willing to tackle the matter there and then....................or maybe they were biased against Murali.

The aussie umpires were more concerned about calling Murali for chucking, then umpiring the game properly.

Agreed it does at time look that Murali chucks, however if he is cleared by the ICC, then there should be no issue.

May be they were biased i do not know. All i know is when they called him first time he did look like a big chucker...and he wasn't cleared from ICC until long after that.
Regarding why no other umpire called him well other umpires are bunch of VUSS. They have the ball in their hand after every over, they see some one has been tampering with it yet they ll let it go match after match...plus look how ICC is, every time an umpire calls out someone, they reinstate that player within a day so why would any umpire play with his own career.

The man was a huge turner of the ball in his hey days. Chucker or not, it was a big challenge for batsmen to play him during his prime. Tendulkar and Lara are the only two guys who played him without problems while he was creating menace.

For what Murali has had to endure throughout his career, he certainly wins high accolades even more so by comparison to Warne who had the luxury of some fine cricketers in his team not to forget 12th man Hair.

Sounds like someone who had their back whooped by Murali. Though he never averaged much against Australia. If Nathan Hauritz is what we call an offspinner these days, you'd better open your eyes instead of raising a hand.

For a start, he was throwing the ball when those umpires reported him. Subsequently the rules were changed. However at the time he was called for throwing he was throwing under the laws of the game. Not sure how you can call them useless when they were in fact correct and applying the laws as they stood at the time.

And yes in general Australians seem to think he throws the ball.

As for me being childish, it is my opinion and I am entitled to it. I don't accept any of his records or performances in the way I do for someone who bowls the ball. Not that this matters in the scheme of things or takes anything away from what he has achieved, it is just my opinion.

Brett Lee also chucks the ball. Just my opinion. But since he's been cleared by the governing bidy, f course I accept all his records.

Off course you ar entitled to your opinion. Not disputing that one bit.

However, the rules were NOT changed to accomodate his normal off spin delivery, which was cleared, more for the doosra, which did not happen until much later.

The reason why i called Hair and Emerson usless, esp Emerson, is that when Ranatunga told Murali to bowl leg spin, he was still called. It is virtually impossible to throw a leg spinner. If that is not bias, then not sure what is.

Daryll Foster, the biomechanic expert has said the following:

"You have got to distinguish Muthiah Muralitharan and Shoaib Akhtar against any so-called normal bowlers. Murali, for one, has got a disability where his right arm is permanently flexed at 38 degrees and he can't do anything about that. He was born with it. Now, when Murali bowls, he does not alter that angle of his arm whatsoever. It looks bad to the naked eye, but when you get it in three-dimensional analysis Murali's angle of that arm does not change; therefore it is not chucking.

Now, Shoaib is another boy that has got a disability. He has got hypermobile joints all over his body. Every joint in Shoaib's body has been tested by a specialist who has announced that he is hypermobile; and we have medical certificates along those lines.

Now, the hypermobility or hyperextension you see on Shoaib's arm when he is bowling, he cannot avoid unless you put braces on his arms. That's just the way the ligament structures are in his elbow joints that he cannot control that hyperextension.

So, again, you are dealing with two boys there who have physical disabilities and according to all the three-dimensional analysis both of them do not chuck under the meaning of the rule."

I think his view counts more than yours, BUT you are still entitled to your opinion.

The interesting thing about those leg spinners (which I remember well cos was actually watching at the time) was that he bowled them with a straight arm. One of the things he argued later was that he had a deformity which prevented him straightening his arm.

My opinion is that, like Shabbir, Murali was able to bowl without chucking but he was far less effective so he chucked the ball. An unconfirmed rumour had Darren Lehmann being asked how he could pick the doosra so easily and Lehmann reportedly said "its the one he really chucks". *cue Darren Lehmann racist etc flaming posts*.

Anyway, whatever the records are he was a legal bowler in his time and respect to him for what he has achieved in his career.

I just hope we never see anyone like that in cricket in my time and this little sad episode is over.
