Why is Batting Powerplay an afterthought?
Why are we frequently caught napping when it comes to taking the batting power play? In the past I recall Pakistan being compelled to take the batting power play in the last five overs. In this series too we seem to have forgotten about this aspect of the game, so that in the second ODI our tailenders were batting during the power play. In the third ODI the obvious time to take it would have been when Afridi was batting. Only after Afridi's dismissal does someone seem to have realized the omission and the power play was taken in the 44th over. These lapses are hard to understand. It is not as if it is a decision that only the captain has to think about. What about the coaching staff and even the other players sitting on the bench? The Pakistan team has too many things going wrong that we can afford to make elementary errors.

What I remember
- when Malik was captain some were saying it was Malik's call - Now YK is captain some are saying it is batsman's call Player's are confused. We have to reach an agreement first. Captain can do a ishara like jumping jack or a player can just point to pavilion to ask. Last edited by 12thMan; 5th August 2009 at 16:57. |

in all the matches i was thinking the same thing what good is the powerplay if the batters who could utilize it are out??
most top teams have set scenarios or players for it ind utilize it when they are going good or when yuvi/pathan is present and set sa utilize it when they are going good or when morkel/boucher are around aus use it with david hussey.. kiwis with mucllum/oram and so |

Because no matter what anyone says most of our players have no idea about the strategic element of cricket. Not Younis, not Malik not Yousuf, considering this one would expect the coach and other staff to pick up the slack but alas our management merely seems a passenger.

It's almost as crucial as a coach not calling a timeout in a basketball game with his team down by 2 points and 2.7 seconds left!

Why have we waited until the last 5 overs to take the batting powerplay ?
I simply dont understand these tactics. Surely it should have been taken when Misbah and Umar were doing so well?

Interesting comments from Ian Chappell today on commentary. He said they may as well call it the bowling powerplay, because the batting team are hardly ever asking for the powerplay and instead its being left to the last 5 overs of an innings.

We continually waste batting powerplays and take them far too late in the game when the tail enders are usually batting.
I simply dont understand these strange tactics that are consistent with whoever is captain.
