Impoverished Indians teach their children to beg

Some poor families in India, unable to send their children to school, have taught them to work as street beggars.

Their parents argue that such an unconventional education makes sense as the children will not get the opportunity to do anything else.

Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri attended a begging for beginners class in a village in eastern India.

Unfortunate.

The same happens in Pakistan.

I mean there are even reports of kids being taken out of school because their parents have to make a choice: do we use the money to feed ourselves or send our kids to school.

This is utterly disgusting...This person is lying because mid-day meal scheme is one of the successful scheme which is implemented country wide and I see no reason for him to send these kids to school. Probably because its an easy way to make money.

Very sad. Subcontinent is about the 'haves & have-nots'

And the gap is a million miles apart

Especially since the situation, socially and morally, in Pakistan is as bad as or even worse than India.

Have any of you guys seen Albanian/Kosovo women begging in the streets of Southall and Slough ?? It seems organised to me, and they certainly don't look that poor. Whenever one begs for money I tell them to "get a proper job".

I do however feel sorry for these people in the clip, even though they are told to beg you can tell how poor and desperate they are.

There are government schools which gives mid day meals for free available everywhere in India............. but some parents are so much greedy they want cash so they send childrens to go to school ....................... the parents are the one that needs to be punished here ....................... if the parents are lazy and have too much kids then there is a huge problem which cannot be cured even if you place some very good schems ...................

See we can not say the same about all parents but one thing is they are poor and uneducated. So when they compare their child going to school (eating free and studying) Vs getting Rs 100- 200 daily they prefer the second.

They do not see the long term benefit of the education.

I had offered education (in Govt school) for 2 of the 3 children of a daily labourer who was working during my house construction. You will be surprised to know he denied after my repeated push. Finally, I had to tell him that he can't work at my house if he is going to use his child as a labourer during the work. He prefered going to other place to work than letting her child study.

What is unfortunate is we'll have another new generation of illiterate people and India will be country of beggars after another 50 years
Legislation against child labor wont help unless it is implemented properly .
