The Swiss government have banned minarets so you want to boycott Swiss products.

The British and American governments launched an illegal war in Iraq killing hundreds and thousands of Muslims - will you also boycott American and British products?

They are not banning mosques but minarets on mosques. Something along the lines of because they mark a distinctive change to the landscape.

The far right have hijacked this issue and started campaigning along the lines that minarets = Islamic extremism.

For the latter reason I'm quite disappointed went through and Switzerland marks a rather dangerous precedence in mindset.

Had they said no religious building is allowed to impose large distinctive shapes on the landscape in Switzerland then it might have made some sense as after all there is nothing too much wrong in preserving architectural landscape if the majority oppose.

Consumers have engaged in such 'boycotts' for decades.

Its all the rage in the West to boycott companies or products. Only worth poking fun at if its Muslims though....

The exception being Americans who stopped eating French Fries because they were stupid enough to think it would harm France!!! But what do you expect of 'Bush's children'!

This is actually quite reasonable.

The Swiss made an idiotic decision.

The Muslims in Switzerland are moderate and well adjusted many come from the Balkans or Turkey.

There are about 400,000 Muslims in Switzerland (second religion after Xtinaity)

160 Mosques

4 Mosques with Minarets.

The crux of the swiss argument is that a minaret is a sign of radicalism, islamism and the domination of Islam???????

The reality is a minaret serves a similar purpose to a Church Spiral, it is used (or was used) as a platform of the muezzin to call the faithful to prayer and it is used as a landmark for the muslims to find a mosque in any particular area (This is the same as a Church spiral)

The swiss took a democratic decision, however idiotic and stupid it was and I think many muslims will not look fondly on the chocolate eating neutral nazi sympathizers

The wrong way of doing things would be to react, act violently etc as this is uncalled for and unnecessary

But I think refusing to buying swiss products as a protest is a reasonable response as opposed to a unreasonable response in the form of anger, terrorism etc.

In short, as a protest even if it is only for a short while muslims should block swiss products and make there feelings known.

Maybe we should boycott EVERYTHING?

UK and US products because of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Swiss because of the minarets
indian because of Kashmir and Balochistan amongst other things
Iranian because of its support of Shia terrorists keeping up the de-stabilization in Iraq as well as Balochistan
Saudi Arabia because they are 'allies' of US
Pakistan because we are 'allies' of US
Ireland because they beat us in 2007 World Cup
France because they have banned headscarves
Germany because they have the biggest alcohol festival in the world as well as they most beer halls in the world (in Munich)
Germany again because they always bloody beat us on penalties n major tournaments!
Carrots because they are orange and orange is the colour of Hinduism and Hindu's worship idols which is against Islam hence we should boycott carrots.
Kiwi-fruit as they are from NZ and we all know about Vettori as well as they fact they've just beaten as AND beat us in CT.
Afghanistan as thy are supporting india in Balochistan/Swat/Waziristan......so for anyone who does heroin or LOVES poppies thats a no im afraid.

tbf, denmark boycotts made an impact.

is this list not the zionist companies though, not necessarily swiss.

this is a dangerous precedent being set here. a country like switzerland, the tranquil tax haven, is ppushing such legislation through, there's no stopping the bigger powers forcing more draconian measures.

i'd be very vary of france, specifically snakeozy.

The Apologists on here are amazing. The Swiss have been condemed by every fair thinking person in the World. They are banning minarets because they are a political statement of Islam. Come again - does that mean Steeple bell towers are a sign of Christian agression? Yet here on PP we get the usual internet idiot bullies who somehow find a way of turning it around as a critique of Islam.

Boycotting goods is part of democracy and capitalism that the blessed "good 'ol" US Of A (rses) is so fond of preaching / imposing on the rest of the world..................

Grow up !

Grow up - this isn't another opportunity to bash Pakistan or muslims. It's about using your democratic and capitalistic right to buy whatever you like and for whatever reqason you like. It doesn't have to be equal or even vaguely logical by your standards.

If enough Muislims boycott Swiss products then you can imagine this idiotic fascist law will be overturned quicker than you can say Swiss Family Robinson.

Do you honestly think many of those products are actually made in Switzerland?

Switzerland is not exactly an industrial giant, with whole swathes of land devoted to large factories, along with the associated infrastructure, such as housing for factory workers, railroad and/or industrial transport hubs to bring in the raw materials and take away the finished goods.

Get real!

If anything, Swiss money is actually used to purchase shares in many household companies/brands that you would not even think about.

As an example, Nestle is the major shareholder in L'Oreal (- French?).

Which, in turn, owns amongst others, Brands such as Garnier, Lancome, plus Geogio Armani perfumes (-Italian ?) , Ralph Lauren pefumes (- American ?), Body Shop, (-British ?)...... to name just a few.

Just because something has the word 'Swiss' in it's branding info does not mean it's made in Switzerland. While, at the same time, many products you would not even associate with the Swiss are actually owned by Swiss companies!

I will never buy another Toblerone. Or a cuckoo clock.

Seriously though, I sympathise with everyone affected by this. There's a very unpleasant wave of bigotry sweeping through Europe at the moment. I recently read about a town in Italy where The Northern League (a far right party) has taken over the local council. They're closing down kebab shops, and are using their powers to harrass immigrant families, calling on them at all hours demanding to see their papers.

The really upsetting and scary thing is that so many ordinary and normally decent people are getting sucked along by this current of intolerance and hatred. I must admit I never thought I'd see racist views become respectable like they used to be up until the 1970's, but it's happening now in Britain, and has already happened in far too much of Europe.

The Denmark boycott did have some effect. And there was controversy there aswell; some people for and others against the boycotts.
