Pakistan v New Zealand | 3rd Test- Day 4 | Napier | 14/12/09

So Pakistan are 120 behind with all 10 wickets in hand. We need to wipe out the deficit 1st. Then with wickets in hand if we can get a sizeable lead till the end of the day. Then with Kaneria on day 5 pitch along with fit aamir and co we will be able to win the game. Once again all negativity stays out of here. Period.

Gooooooo Pakistan.

I presume Butt and Farhat will wipe the lead off by lunch and then they come out play a bit faster and they send in Umar Akmal who would play super fast, only then we can get a good lead by the end of the day and send NZ into bat tomorrow morning.

If we had likes of Sehwag we could have thought about winning the match. Right now we should make sure we do not lose this match. We need to bat all day 4 and then an hour of day 5 to guaranttee that this will be a draw. If Kineria pulls a super special on day 5 then we may even have a chance to win but first things first.

Survive first 30 minutes then up the tempo. After we wipe out the lead we are gonna see some dirty/negative tactics by cashmish so scoring at quick rate might be the problem

I can only hope to have some single/double taken regularly (3 runs an over in first session) and Pakistan all out at 480-500 by early tomorrow morning so there is no issue of declaration. The issue will only come if Pakistan had NZ 8 down and play called off or it could be opposite that NZ win by 1-2 wickets and 5 overs left and Pakistan had declared. Both will make a great match

OK lets be positive (with a hint of realism thrown in).

Morning session
80 for the loss of one of the openers and Bhanja (you said be positive not expect miracles)

Afternoon session
The other opener goes plus Mohammad Yousuf gets a well made 50 odd, say 85 more runs in this session. This leaves Pakistan effectively 45-3

Evening session
This is where Pakistan can put the pressure on New Zealand, One or both of the Akmal brothers so score a quick 50 odd with good support form Mohammad Yousuf. Lets say Yousuf goes for 80 odd, one Akmal gets 60 odd and the other remains not out. 120 runs in the session for the loss of 2 more wkts. Pak around 400-5 or effectively 165-5.

If they manage to bat till just beyond lunch in the last day, the match should be safe.

As I posted in another thread, we strongly need to first secure a draw. Can't emphasize that enough.

There are 4 tests played at Napier that have gone into the 4th inning. Here are the 4th inning totals and results:

Test 1292 (SL won): NZ 185 all out @ 2.2 runs/over
Test 1746 (match drawn): SL 7 for no loss @ 4.7 runs/over
Test 1868 (ENG won): NZ 431 all out @ 3.6 runs/over
Test 1900 (match drawn): NZ 220 for 5 @ 4.3 runs/over

What this means is that we'll need to give NZ an asking rate of AT LEAST 4.0 runs/over.

If we are to bowl at them for 70 overs, that's a target of 280, meaning we make 280 + 248 = 528 total, or 528 - 128 = 400 in the next 90 + 20 = 110 overs.

If we are to bowl at them for 80 overs, that's a target of 320, meaning we make 320 + 248 = 568 total, or 568 - 128 = 440 in the next 90 + 10 = 100 overs.

To score another 400+ runs, we need at least 2 new 100s and a couple of 50s. Probably too drastic a change from 3 middle-order ducks in the first inning?

More importantly, we need to really increase our own scoring rate once the deficit has been converted to a lead of 100 or more.

Now thats is very helpful.

Taylor & McCallum are their fast scorers - I still think secure the draw 1st & foremost though

I really don't think Pakistan are going to go for the win, until like, MAYBE the last session today, if that. But I really hope they surprise me and do, because draws are boring.

If we can wipe the lead out by lunch, I'd be very surprised.
