T20 has helped Test cricket: Afridi

Contrary to Mohammed Yousuf's assumption that T20 cricket would eventually destroy Test cricket, Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi says it has actually made the five-day games more result-oriented.

Test skipper Yousuf feels that batsmen these days are paying more attention to adjust to the slam-bang format and hardly care to develop technique, which is essential to be successful in Test cricket.

However, T20 skipper Afridi differs with Yousuf.

"I don't think that will happen because Test and ODIs both have their own charm. Infact I would say T20 cricket has introduced a more positive attitude in players and led to Tests also being played more aggressively and being more result oriented," Afridi said.

"What we need to do is strike the right balance in our teams for all three formats of the sport," he added.

Afridi advocated the need to develop the national teams according to the abilities of the players.

"Already we have certain players who are Test specialists including Yousuf himself, then they are players who are specialists for the limited overs cricket and in the third category they are players who are adjust in all three forms of the sport.

"It would not be a bad idea if we can build our Test, ODI and T20 teams according to this policy. We need to groom and develop our players accordingly," Afridi said.

Captain Yousuf and others need to remember the vital role T20 played in keeping Pakistani cricket alive and in keeping the players and fans motivated. Pakistani cricket was already on the down slide when the first T20 WC happened. And then they won the WC the next year. That has been a huge inspiration and pride for players and fans alike and has kept the passion and hope alive.

Don't blame failures on T20. If at all, T20 has helped Pakistani cricket. Don't try to find weak excuses for pathetic failures.

But I have to disagree with Afridi's statement that T20 has helped test cricket . No, it hasn't/

All the T20 players batted with a good strike rate.

Thats Pakistan, but lets compare the Indian strike rates to Pakistani strike rates especially in conditions in New Zealand and Australia.

The Pakistani batting has been absolutely disgraceful since the retirement of Inzi, our batters are just not efficient and consistent enough, shot selection is just pathetic, they dont know how to bat to the situation.

In the current team, Imran Farhat, Misbah definately needs to go for sure, Butt is just surviving at the moment, we would be well served by planning beyond Younis and Yousaf, these two cannot carry our batting forever and Yousaf i am afraid is not the same batsman as in 2006, his strike rate, reflexes have suffered big time. He certainly doesnt bat with the same confidence anymore.

T20 ---> helps ODI cricket ---> helps Test cricket.

A good example of this is Watson. He is now a all rounder who opens the batting in Test cricket for the Aussies. He is not flawless by any means but T20/ODI is definitely helping him in Test cricket.

But raving for the return of Afridi in tests ?
And then asking him to be captain of Test team
Surely u jest sir
Sometimes i just smile when i look at our fans thoughts....

Afridi may be avg but he is still better then a lot of batsman in that pakistani line up....he will be better then misbah and others...he cant be worse then ajmal as a bowler and malik as a batsman....but the thing is does he have the temperament to grind it out......

No offense but why do some people think that WHATEVER Afridi says, we cannot disagree with it?

Pakistan's RR has recently almost always been 2RPO, T20 hasnt done jack in terms of helping us, apart from giving our wickets away (as usual).

generally t20 has made the game more result oriented

However, its the negative results that keep rolling in for pakistan because of our inability to score big (which is partly due to t20)
