Watching cricket in 3D?

I just read that ESPN is going to launch a 3D network in June. They are going to capture a World Cup soccer match in 3D, creating what it says will be the first all three-dimensional television network to the home. Read full article here:
http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/...-network_N.htm

Now would it be fun to watch a action packed T20 cricket match in 3D? Imagine a spectacular diving catch taken by a fielder and the TV viewers are immersed in that experience, or a wonderful batting display coming alive in this fashion.

High Definition (HD) technology came around six years ago and there has been some cricket coverage in this format. It really lifts the viewing experience. Yes cost is a prohibitive factor but with time everything gets affordable. I say bring on the 3D coverage of sports...the viewers might just be wowed.

But for now, I am going to indulge in the visual experience of Avatar...

Forget about 3D, lets cricket gets to HD first. Apart from UK and Australia, all the other cricketing nations are still on 2D format.

Cricinfo have had the 3d live match emulator thingy for a few years now, it's a failed concept as watching sports live is much more desirable.

Not even movies are being regularly produced in 3D...so yes there is a looong way to go, but it does not stop pioneers to experiment with technology.

Well for the current set that are coming out yes, but they're developing 3DTV's which can function without the use of glasses.

I don't think you read it enough yet. Scroll down further on that page contained in the link. The answer is a YES.

Long time before cricket will see any of this. The production costs can only be afforded for big-league games. And 70% of your audience is sitting in the subcontinent, where even HDTV is a rarity.

Hate 3D, watched a couple movies in 3D and just does my head in, when they have 3D and I don't have to use them flipping specs than it should be better or maybe it's just those cheap specs they give at the cinemas and the more expensive ones from Samsung etc are much better?

in the last 2/3 yrs majority of matches being played have been shown through HD.. I think Neo Cricket has decided not to show India - WI series in HD for cost reasons but otherwise all matches are being shown in HD.....

Also till last year there used to be no Ad-breaks in between overs when viewing in HD but that is gone now and HD matches are also with Ad-breaks now

Sky 3D in the UK has been around for quite some time now. Not sure if they've done any cricket but they've done quite a few Premier League games in 3D.

I tried converting some matches into 3d using some programs and it was not that much fun to be honest in comparison to some movies I converted but I used Blue-Cyan glasses in format may be shutter based sys will be fun.
