Punished players can appeal, says PCB

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has clarified that all the seven punished cricketers have the right of appeal.

“They have the right to appeal against their respective punishments, which can be lodged with the PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt,” said a spokesman of the PCB here on Wednesday.

The PCB, being fed up with repeated incidents of indiscipline and player power during the tour of Australia, had constituted an inquiry committee to deal with the matter. As a result life bans were handed out to former captains Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousaf besides the year-long bans on former captain Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan.

Both of them were also fined Rs20,00,000 (two million) each. The PCB while extending its crackdown against other trouble makers also fined T-20 captain Shahid Afridi Rs30,00,000 (three million) for his shameful ball tampering act, putting him on a six-month probation in order to monitor his further conduct.

Similarly, Akmal brothers —wicket keeper batsman Kamran and younger brother Umar — were also fined Rs30,00,000 and Rs20,00,000, respectively. Both have also been put on probation for six months.

To a question, he said that if lodged, the appeals will have to go through the usual procedure.

None of the seven top players banned and fined by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) under various charges raised against them during the last tour of Australia are likely to appeal before the board to reconsider the harsh punishments imposed on them.

Moreover, the PCB did not even form any appellant tribunal for hearing of appeals.

The affected players are only left with the choice of going to court as was done by maverick fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar against his five-year ban and fine of Rs7,00,000 (seven million) in the past.

Although that case is still in the court, Shoaib succeeded in getting a stay order against the punishment. Thus he remains eligible to play cricket, if selected.

next thing we know Malik and Rana will be back for T20 WC.

PCB changes decisions within minutes, and here we have nearly 2 months to world cup.

players can appeal and win the case to avoid the ban but the board still decides which players play.
