Who is the best finisher in the game?

I am talking about individuals who pace their innings and accelerate at the right time to either setup a good total or chase one down. For me it would be Mike hussey and MS Dhoni.
Anyone else who comes to mind?

From the old school, Michael Bevan of course.

Albie Morkel killed us last year in that role although he just smashes it.

Javed being famous for it, especially the last ball six.

McMillan from NZ gets a bit underrated, he killed us too.

Even if he (subjectively) does, it doesn't matter. Bevan defined what a finisher is. Look it up in Webster, all it says is "See Bevan"

Michael Bevan was/is the Bradman of finishing games off. No doubt about it.

Now that Bevan has retired, I think Dhoni is the closest to him in terms of sheer ability to soak in the pressure and just beat teams on his own.

There a few other quality finishers but they are below Dhoni as of right now.

Bevan for sure, Hussey took up that role recently.
if not Hussey, then any other Aussie Batsman or even guys like Hauritz and Johnson can step up, because Australia knows how to win, talent isn't everything(not to say Aussie are not talented) but mental toughness is required to finish off a game.

Agree with Irfan, Hussey has taken the role of Bevan.
Anyway, if Pakistan didn't let Hussey bat so well in the Sydney Test, his career might just have been over right now

No credit taken away from him though, he's a lovely batsman.

One of the great advantages our domestic game has is that the season is short. 4 day game H&A, one day game H&A, T20 H&A against 5 other teams plus finals is the entire cricket season here.

If you dont perform in crunch matches you don't get many chances to make amends.

Bevan is the best of all time; in modern times I'd say Hussey comes close.
Razzaq and Oram also developed into an excellent finishers pre-WC07. Dhoni and White are good examples too.

I cant believe people call Hussey as a finisher . He only bats well batting first . how many matches do you remember him helping Aus chase down big totals ?

What are you on about? 'Chasing big totals' is the definition of a finisher? LOL; he has played a fair few knocks which have ended a well paced chase, regardless of the total - in fact he recently did so in the final Pak/Aus ODI. In the modern game, he has the 10th best average of a batsman batting in the second innings (min. 30ins): http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/...s;type=batting

He hardly sucks.

Miandad by far was the best finisher of his time, and certainly one of the best of all times. Imran Khan actually learned a lot from him in that category.

Hussey plays well because he comes in after the 25th, and mostly after the 30th, over. The fields are wide spread, ball is old, bowlers are second and third change or even part timers. Fawad can do the same hack if he develops some harder hitting strokes.

And that's why Hussey has been failing in an epic fashion in tests when you remove that setup.

Nice thread.

Hussey and Shahid.

Four times out of ten I would put my money on them to chase that total successfully. 100 off 9 overs isn't too extraordinary a chase if you think about T20 chases thesedays.

If Inzimam hadn't retired - he'd be there with Hussey.

A run rate of 11+ most likely none of them will get it done each time.

Once in a while any of them might do it, as in one in 5 times.

Hussey and Dhoni. Though Hussey is Gulla's bunny, so Morgan instead if they don't have to face

Sachin will most likely score 96 runs off 7 overs and get out - leaving the rest of the team to crumble.

(Fuel, meet fire).
