A Celebration of Cricket
The ESS Broadcast of the ICC World T20 West Indies 2010 The Thought A mere five days after the marketing magnum opus that is the Indian Premier League ends, commerce promises to take a backseat again to cricket. The ICC World Twenty 20 in the West Indies, commencing on April 30th, is poised to play saviour to the senses. Normal service is about to be restored. The television coverage will be about the cricket again, mercifully. The twenty20 action will be as breathtaking as ever. As a viewer, you’ll be allowed to catch your breath between deliveries watching replays, not commercials. And best of all, you’ll be watching relatively classy visuals backed by some of the best commentary our times have to offer. The Track Record It’s fair to say that ESPN Star Sports (ESS) has set the benchmark in the television coverage of T20 International cricket. When ESS began its host broadcast of the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007, the emphasis was on creating an innovative production that celebrated the essence of the shortest format of the game, by bringing out the nuances while keeping pace with all the drama and the excitement. It’s a vision that has served ESS well, and three years on, we see innovations from that tournament (tournament sixes counter, the field plan) being incorporated by other broadcasters in their productions – a testimony to how good these ideas really were. With over 50 T20 Internationals to its credit, ESS has more experience covering this young and dynamic format than any other broadcaster. After two successful editions of the ICC World T20, ESS braces itself for the third edition – 2010’s cricket carnival in the Caribbean. The Tournament The third edition of the ICC World T20 will see action spread across three venues in the West Indies – Guyana in the South American mainland, and the islands of St. Lucia and Barbados. This cricket carnival will boast of 27 matches, all of which will be covered live. To add to this, the semifinals and the final of the Women’s World T20, taking place concurrently, will also be broadcast live. The Toys What’s a game without its toys? For the ICC World T20 West Indies 2010, ESS will throw in the works. To capture all the sensational cricket action, there will be as many as 25 cameras stationed at every conceivable corner of the stadium. Among these 25 cameras, playing a star turn will be two super slow motion cameras. These are highly specialized high speed cameras that capture many thousand more frames per second than the standard cameras, letting you see all the fabulous detailing in the action that unfolds. God they say, lives in the detail. He must then really fancy these super slo mo cams! Regardless of where you’d rather be, what vantage you’d prefer, we’ve got it all covered. The manned cameras at various positions will cover every inch of the ground, and even the air above! There will be radio-linked hand-held cameras that allow you to walk in and walk out with the batsmen. And of course, there will also be stump cameras at either end of the pitch, to bring you those fabulous views from the middle. Just as it is absolutely essential to show you all the spellbinding action live as it happens, it’s equally critical to bring you all the replays from the best of angles to analyse the particular piece of action that has just left you spellbound. To this end, ESS will use the best in slow motion playback equipment, courtesy EVS technology. These clever machines record the output from the cameras and play them back in slow motion, bringing you the best replays in the house. Now we know how much cricket loves its statistics and numbers. To make sense of the game, you need to make sense of these numbers. It is imperative to package and present these numbers and indeed all the other necessary information in the best possible way, making it easy to read and comprehend. This task of generating live, real-time graphics is performed with much aplomb by our appointed graphics provider Alston Elliot. To add even more meaningful colour to the graphic element, ESS makes use of Hawk-Eye virtual graphics. Besides using it to pass a verdict on LBW appeals, Hawk-eye is used to illustrate a wide range of statistics in an attractive and effective way. These then are some of the toys used in our cricket broadcast. They all come together to make one mean cricket broadcast! The Talkers Just as important as the pictures on a broadcast are the voices on it. ESS has always believed in having a top class commentary panel on all broadcasts. Lending their voices and wisdom this time around will be a host of big names. Leading the Indian charge will be former all-rounder Ravi Shastri, the two studious batsmen from Mumbai – Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar, along with renowned broadcaster Harsha Bhogle. The English brigade will consist of David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd, probably the most popular commentator going around, and former skipper and interviewer extraordinaire Nasser Hussain. Joining them will be the two legendary Ians – B&C. The amiable Ian Bishop will bring a flavour of the Caribbean to the broadcast. Another former skipper Ian Chappell, one of the best analysts of the game, will weigh in from down under. The dynamic Simon Doull will represent New Zealand and the cheerful Ramiz Raja will join us from Pakistan. Pommie Mbangwa will bring to the table the African perspective and ESS’ own silky-smooth Alan Wilkins will round up the commentary panel. To add to this formidable line-up, the articulate former West Indies skipper Daren Ganga will join us as a guest commentator for all the West Indies games. These guys can sure talk a good game! The Team Machines of course, are only as good as the men behind them, It’s all very well to have the best equipment going around, but all this won’t matter very much if we don’t have the right people manning them. Thankfully, we do! ESS works with a vastly experienced crew who in addition to being really good at what they do, love their cricket too. Can’t ask for much more! It’s time then, for the clutter to end and the cricket to commence. May the carnival of cricket in the Caribbean be the best ever! ICC World T20, here we come! http://www.espnstar.com/cricket/icc-...iving-it-live/ so no

I'm happy with that list. Pretty much all of my favourite commentators. To make it perfect, they could have added Geofrey Boycott and Danny Morrison but it's still a pretty good team of commentators.

No Michael Holding and Mike Atherton?
That's disappointing. Other than that, a good list.

Disappointed to see Ramiz instead of Wasim. Wasim is so much better.
Wasim commentated so much better in the T20 WC '09 than Ramiz in the T20 WC '07. |

Harsha Bhogle and Sunil Gavaskar? Two of the most boring commentators going around. Happy with Bumble, Nasser, Sanjay Manjerekar, and Pommie though. Ramiz, Ravi, Simon Doull and Ian Bishop are OK, I guess.

So dissapointed that there'll be no Akram. A few memorable jams [just from the top of my head] from him-
"Pakistan has qualified for the ICC World T20" (SF vs SA) "When I saw that it was Malik under it, I was calm too" (Brilliant neutrality displayed SF Vs SA) "This is.. UNDER PRESSURE" (Throughout tournament) "This is what we needed and I think THIS will gel us together" (Final )

well the previous two WC went well since there was no Ramiz, but I guess this had to happen some time or the other.
I'd rather have no Pak commentators than Ramiz Raja.

I am glad Bumble and Nasser have been signed up for a commentary spot.
Both are top class commentators and I will keenly await their turn behind the mic.

I used to be a big fan of Bumble and I still think he's great in test matches but he gets a bit tiresome for me in any other games.
Shastri - 8/10 Gavaskar - 2/10 Manjrekar - 6.5/10 Bhogle - 1/10 Bumble - 6/10 Hussain - 9/10 Bishop - 5/10 Chappell -9.5/10 Doull - 1/10 Rambo - 6/10 Mbangwa - 1/10 Wilkins - 4/10 |

The usual suspects
Ian Chappel Ravi Shastri Suni Gavaskar Harsha Bhogle Sanjay Manjrekar Wasim is part of the anchors so he won't be commentating. So Rameez is the only Pakistani I think. Not sure about the female commy and others.. Of course I am talking only about the ESS team. Not sure if there is a Sky or other team that covers the matches.
