Sanath Jayasuriya - the slow torture

Jayasuriya should really call it quits. Again today, the captain tried to motivate him and promote him up to open the batting again (which most of us wanted to see him do), but he really looks a total shadow of himself.

It's just insulting how the same Jayasuriya which would pull a short ball regardless of it's pace over the boundary for ease is now getting caught at short fine leg in the circle going for a pull shot.. how the same Jayasuriya before would flick any ball on his pads regardless of it's length so wristily over deep square leg for six is now getting wrapped up flush on his pads over and over.

His hand-eye coordination, reaction time etc. is getting worse.

It's really bad for us fans too - we'd rather see Jayasuriya not play at all than this insult of a true legend playing for the Sri Lankan team right now.

Well past it. I'm sure himself and Misbah will enjoy chilling out with pipes and slippers in their retirement home.

This really sucks. I really hate knowing the fact that this this insult of a player playing in the SL lineup used to be the best batsman in world cricket before. Jayasuriya is a class act, a legend. It's sad watching him go down like this.

Best batsman in world cricket? thats just funny.

In one dayers, his reputation was just built on the 1996 WC, his average is very poor, and his strike is pretty damn good, but not in the Afridi, Sehwag, Gilchrist league.

In tests, we dont have a figure for his strike rate, but his average of 40, almost exactly, hardly indicates world class. No one come to me with cr*p about him playing for a bad team, or in the wrong position, because young openers in SL were often demoted to 3, or very low in the order, because of him being there, and SL had already won the world cup in most of his career, so its not as if he played for a poor team.

Imo, very overrated player. On his day, terrific, but not in the Lara, Ponting, Inzy league, and nowhere near Sachin...

His hand eye co-ordination has gone, it normally does when you go past 35. Even last year in England he seemed to be hitting Aamirs short deliveries very high and late on the bat.

The guy is a ODI legend but he needs to call it a day now.

To be fair to jaya, didn't he retire a few years ago only to be begged to reconsider. Sportsmen are always the last to realise that they're washed up....it should be the job of the management or selectors.....I wouldn't be surprised to see him perform in the next game tho...

Please do not compare jaya and misbah!

At least Jaya is picked on reputation - he's given SL excellent service over a long long time - for selectors sometimes the heart rules the head in the hope of one last great performance, but this is the norm, it happens....sooner or later they'll realise and drop him or ask him nicely to retire.

Misbah on the other hand, doesn't have a reputation! He's done absolutely zilch. People say he's picked for his "experience" - what experience?? He's only played regular international cricket for less than 3 years!! Old does not equal experienced!

Jaya and Misbah should join a IVL (International veterans league). that may end up having a few other really good players too:
a) all the retired players playing in IPL
b) all the recently banned players from pak (yousuf, younis, etc)
c) all the domestic giants that never make it big on intl scene (hasan raza types)

They don't all do that on their own. Their selectors give many of them a pretty obvious hint to retire or expect an unceremonious exit.

Sanath Jayasuriya dropped from Sri Lanka Cricket contract

http://blogs.bettor.com/Sanath-Jayas...ontract-a16066

Finally 41 years old Sanath Teran Jayasuriya reached an end of his career with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board as the board announced curtains for the prolific cricketer. The SLC is busy in finalizing the central contracts of the players of national cricket team and the Lankan cricketing veteran failed to get his central contract revised with the board.

The cricket fans were shocked when they came to know about the omission of the senior most member of the Lankan cricket Parliament Sanath Teran Jayasuriya from the central contract list. Former captain of Sri Lanka, Aravinda de Silva was leading the panel of selectors that was deciding the contracts of Sri Lankan players for the coming season 2010/11. The panel jointly requested the Sri Lanka cricket hierarchy to exclude the cricketing veteran from the list of players that have been contracted by the board for the 2010/11 season.

The central Contracts of the Lankan cricketers were expired at the end of March earlier this year and were postponed on account of logistical grounds. Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga revealed the current situation while talking to the media reporters. Ranatunga said that “Now we have ironed out the few creases on the sheet and are ready to sign them up before the first Test against India at Galle on the 18th of July.” He also hinted of some more additions to the contract list after the Sri Lanka A tour of Australia.

Jayasuriya made his test debut almost twenty years ago on 22 February 1991 when he played against New Zealand at Hamilton. He turned out for Sri Lanka in 110 Test matches scoring 6973 runs at an average of 40.07. His 16 years test career saw him recording 14 hundreds and 31 half-centuries. In 1997 Jayasuriya also recorded a triple century of his test career when he scored 340 runs while playing against India at the R. Premadasa Stadium. His 340 is the highest Test score of any Sri Lankan so far. On September 20, 2005, the veteran Lankan cricketer played his 100th Test and became the first Sri Lankan player to make the Lankan test squad hundred times.

The left hand opening batsman of Sri Lanka was more fruitful in the limited over cricket specifically One Day Internationals. He played for his country in 444 ODIs at an average of 32.43, scoring 13,428 runs. The aggressive Jayasuriya also claims the fastest ODI fifty that he piled up off just 17 deliveries. He was also the record holder of fastest century (off just 48 balls) since 1996 when the Boom Boom Afridi over took his record by smashing a century off just 36 balls in his ODI debut.

The top five contracted players including the current captain of Sri Lankan cricket team Kumar Sangakkara, vice captain Muttiah Muralitharan, former captain Mahela Jayawardena, T.M. Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera all have been contracted under the Category 1. Muralitharan, however, after announcing his retirement from the test cricket would be paid only 40 per cent of his contract, but, still will be rated among the top five contracted Lankan cricketers.

The retirement of Murali after the Gale test has put the selectors ponder upon the selection of vice captain for the second test against India which will start on July 26 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Grounds. The probable names for the vice captaincy after Murali include the next senior most cricketer Dilshan and steady Thilan Samaraweera. At the same time one cannot neglect the 23 years old Angelo Mathews for the job. Promising all-rounder has been placed in the category III, leaving behind several seniors as well.
