The Official Android Thread

Just started using the HTC Hero and am absolutely loving it. Any other Android users here? What apps do you have/recommend? The Hero does not have a pre-installed notes/task/to-do app so I downloaded the Note Everything app and while it is efficient I find it very basic. I am looking for one that enables both notes + tasks and can provide reminders. Any suggestions?

Really looking forward to getting an android phone as Apple seem so stubborn when it comes to flash ("All the web , my a.se").

That and the fact I want physical qwerty keybpoard on a smartphone aswell as the touchscreen.

What really stops me at the mo going for android, and it might seem minor to many, is the music player or lack thereof of a decent sound quality EQ on android phones.

Whatever one may say of SE, their walkman branded phones have some of the best sound quality of phones when your out an about with headphones (yes I know these matter too); I'm forgetful as it is, so having everything in one phone matters.
Audiophiles may recoil in horror, but I'm very fond of Sony's EQ settings, so was dissapointed that the X10 (for all its other faults) didn't have a Walkman esque media player or Sony style EQ settings.

No sign of a W series touchscreen qwerty keyboard android, which would suit me fine, as would the new X10 mini pro if the music player has good EQ's.

Would love a HTC Android, but no physical QWERTY' as of yet; though rumours are that HTC "espresso" will be a QWERTY version of Hero.

Of course I'm amazed in the leap in capabilities smartphones provide - Windows have to up their game too -

But my next phone should be one that lasts a good 4-5 years and I like androids open source nature; far more than apple, + androids flexibility.

P.S - Any other recommendations? ANy old androids worth getting on the cheap?

Good choice GA. One of my friends has Desire and it's brilliant. Good luck on getting a good deal.

And Tapori I am a pretty hardcore iPod Nano guy so music features on my phone don't really matter to me. But I understand some people like to have everything on one device. Good luck on finding the right phone.

A lot of good ones are actually free. And the paid ones start from 99p to about 2.99 generally.

Yeah I've got one the 1st gen nano's - Brilliant innovation and interface - But when I had a w850i with a 8GB card, I never felt the need to go back - Not so much the sound (though again I do prefer megabass) just the practicality of one device.

GA - Yeah, as equinox said loads of free apps with many "Top free android apps" lists dotted around the established tech review sites.

Oh, and screw apple for not allowing tethering; like if you want to use your phone as high speed modem when your out and about.

Got the desire a few days ago, I set it up yesterday and so far I love it, so many things to explore - I was worked about the on screen keyboard BUT it is actually very good

The battery seems to die quickly BUT it should be a bit better once I download apps that help prolong the battery life

I purchasec HTC Legend few days back it's been fantastic so far. Wasted tons of time playing Speed for 3d, Paper Toss and wordup! The application I use most is mapdroyd, it's among the very few which provides free offline GPS maps for asian countries. Btw- i'm still confused over Advance Task Killer, ES Tasmanager kind of application. There's some strong advise against the usage of these apps. So far, I do use these but only to kill apps which I started (games, browser etc) - don't ever kill native running apps.

I have had the G1/HTC Dream for a year and a half now. 1st gen Android phone which has gone through many updates now. I am currently running CyanogenMod on it. I had most of the things already that are just now coming out on FroYo 2.2

I have been waiting for a good new phone to come out to replace my hardware. I think the Evo might be the one that I switch to but I am a fan of the physical keyboard. My favorite app has been gMote. Plus I like simple apps like bubble (level), ruler (using the trackball to measure distance) as they are more creative ideas about how to use your phone.

Android hands down. Windows Mobile is not really designed to use your fingers. You need a stylus to click most of the time. Windows Mobile also ran really really slowly for me. Plus its not as simple to install apps on WinMo.

I am using an iphone right now but thinking of switching to android, just because I would like to use flash.

Can any of you gadget guys do a little comparison between these two devices?

I love iphone and would even get an ipad If it wasn't for the flash.

Too late - I got my HTC Desire a few days ago

Im not a massive fan of the iphones - overpriced, restricted and usually overrated

I expect the 4G to have certain features blocked until the later versions, typical of Apple

Pound for pound my HTC Desire kicks the iphones backside

Question for Desire owners - the apps get saved onto the phones internal memory, which is only 128MB - is there a way to save apps onto the Micro SD Cards?

I have had many WM phones from HTC and only until the HD2 has there been a hardware platform man enough to run this operating system without an annoying lag. It is a mature OS though which means it has some good useful apps which I have become reliant on over the years. I am reluctant to move to another OS in case there isn't an equivalent app.

a few examples:

Media player: Coreplayer
Browser: Text based websites (opera mini), Flash based (Skyfire, IE, opera 9.7, 10)
Place shifting: Take the TV with you, Slingplayer,
Internet TV: TV Catchup through Skyfire browser, MyPlayer (excellent app for iPlayer, has download facility)
WiFiRouter: convert your phone into a 3G router.
Internet radio: Internet Explorer, Opera

Android version 2.2 (FroYo) which is out now on some phones has the option of saving the app to the SD card. You can go to the settings and applications and choose, "Save to SD" or switch it back to the phone for each app.

If you have rooted your phone and installed a Mod, such as CyanogenMod, you have access to Apps2SD which automatically installs all your apps to the SD card.

iQuran - Read the Holy Quran in Arabic alongside its English Translation
Telawa - An app that lets you listen to the Koran. 3 available: Sheikh El Ghamidi, Sheikh Mahmoud Hossari and al-Sheikh Abd el Bassat Abd el Samad
2010 World Cup - Havnt used it yet since the World Cup hasnt started BUT a good way of keeping tabs witj it
Dolphin Browser HD - prefer it to the HTC browser as it has tabs
Advanced Task Killer - Closes apps, although some people have said it isnt needed, I use it in anyways
Batteryminder - Lets me know the battery status, it does it in percentages rather than bars which is what the HTC has
3G Quota - Keeps tabs on 3G usage, so I can make sure I dont go over my monthly allowance
Google Goggles - awesome app, have so much fun with it
Basketball Lite - Fun timepass game
Labyrinth Lite - as above
Paper Toss - as above

World DroidCup is good to follow the world cup.

My cousin made an app to find the masjid nearest you. It is called Nearest Masjid

You can download it by using your barcode scanner on the phone to scan the following QR code. Only for the UK currently.

IPhone has a lot more apps at the moment BUT Android is definitely growing and there are plenty of good apps available - all for free as well

Also I'm not sure what the procedure is like for adding newtye apps on the iPhone BUT it is dead easy on desire/android

Finally get hold of the new android based HTC Evo 4G and I am loving every moment of it. The biggest advantage for me is definitely increase call quality in my area, being a previous owner of iPhone and BB from AT&T, I hate their voice services, not to mention their outrageous data plans. Now I am on sprint network and have been following live streaming and on-demand football action from ESPN3 (mobile) on my HD capable phone. Not to mention, the ease of which I can use apps and not to worry about iTunes crap. Still figuring out apps but there are lot of fee quality apps available on a Market which will keep growing as more and more users will be switching from other carriers because of AT&T coverage and charges.

Recently installed the following apps

JuicePlotter - great app, plots your battery usage onto a graph so you can see whether the battery goes down at a normal rate and what stuff drains it etc

BUT the best thing was a beta app (its not been released on the marketplace yet) called RockPlayerBase - this is just class, what this lets you do is basically play divx/avi movies/shows without the need to convert them, you simply connect your phone to your PC, add whatever film/show and you can watch away - amazing

Any decent navigation app for the android OS?

I am mulling the idea of buying an android phone after years of owning WM ones, but probably wait till froyo is released on the Desire and check the flash 10.1 performance.

Yeah, my ATK experiences were similar. Didn't notice any performance improvement by having it. Apps I installed lately -

Phonalyzr - Fun tool that tells you Calll/ SMS habits in form of report. Things like Who calls/ SMS you most, when you most called etc. etc.

Yahoo! Mail Was looking for an official Android client for yahoo mail since long - this one looks pretty good.

Robo Defense full version I'm addicted to this game like anything. Current at 31st level...

Bluetooth File Transfer Does what it says - pretty handy!

Anyone else using Swype keyboard? I have it on my Nexus One. I couldn't even go back to traditional texting. It's not only intuitive, but it's also fun, and a LOT faster. It comes standard on the new Droid X I believe, and will be a standard on all new touch screen phones. But the traditional way will also be on them too.

It is still in beta, you would have to register at http://beta.swype.com/ and follow instructions in order to get it installed on your Android device.

I heard that is brilliant and it looks class BUT the beta is closed so cant get it - hopefully the proper version comes out soon

I am contemplating dumping my Hero for an iPhone 4 (when it becomes available on 3) or a 3GS. I am getting frustrated with 3, they haven't yet got the firmware update for Hero. And I am missing out on all the new apps. Plus I have never had an iPhone before so might as well see what the fuss is about.

I have it on the hd2 and can confirm it is brilliant. Sometimes it feels better than having a phone with a hardware keyboard.

PS. This message is sent using swype.

Get a desire - cheaper and just as good really (though this will be with the 2.2 update which we should get in the near future)

I got the Samsung Vibrant which is basically a Samsung Galaxy S series phone for T-Mobile.

My reactions are mixed at the moment coming from a G1/Dream. For me, it is too much like the iPhone. The Launcher and the shape of the phone looks like the iPhone. There is too much Samsung customization over the regular Android interface. however I do like a lot of other things. Some of those customizations is having a puzzle piece appear for your missed calls and messages which you can slide that puzzle on your lock screen to unlock and go to the missed call/message directly.

The Swype keyboard is quite good. I just don't know what to do when I write things like my name which is not in the dictionary and it does not let me correct it.

The Camera and video is good on this. Samsung's gallery is good too. I love this screen. The phone came free with Avatar and The Sims 3

Installed Google Maps Brut (modded version of Google Maps), allows to save Google maps offline on SD card to be used later-on. It has also solved the navigation problem - a great app.

Got the following apps/games lately

Talking Tom Cat - Basically its a cat which repeats what you say, you can also interact with it briefly (rub its stomach, hit etc) - my son loves it and it can keep him entertained for some time
Hit Penguin - a game where you hit a penguin and see how far it goes
Draw - A drawing app, good timepass when you are bored
xPiano - A piano, keeps the son entertained
Solo Lite - a Guitar app, quite cool
Falling Ball - game where you got to avoid bouncing balls from hitting you

I have been using my phone's iQuran for bookmarking where I have read up till. I read on the phone while on the train but at home or in the masjid I use an actual Quran. In those cases, I keep track of which ayah I read up till and then bookmark it again on my phone. I really like the screen on my Vibrant. it is much easier to read on this than on my old G1.

I also downloaded weightpad to keep track of my weight in Ramadan. You enter your weight on it every day and it graphs it for you.

Has anyone got Froyo (Android 2.2) yet?

It has been released BUT those with branded sets have to wait - Orange should have the update within the next month, cant wait to save apps to SD and also interested to see how the HD camera performs

Was about to get the Desire, but then something came over me one boring afternoon and ordered the Iphone 4 after not having purchased an Apple product all my life. What a sell-out!

I will most likely just sell the Iphone 4 off for a profit (they're selling for $1.1 AUD on Ebay!), and then get the Desire, or maybe even wait for the Evo or Incredible to be released.

I doubt the Hero will get 2.2 (though im not sure for certain) - from what I read the Hero recently got the 2.1 Update so its unlikely they will get 2.2 any time soon, if at all

It seems the likes of Legend and Desire are apple of their eyes
While Hero is receiving sort of shabby treatment..,

Anyways,I am happy with 2.1....The phone is running smoothly, would definitely look for some applications/games mentioned by you and others here..Infact I tried,Labyrinth lite...A nice game BUT it was only a trial version...

Silent time -> Allows to schedule when you want ring-tone to be silent. One can set a recurring silent setting for night time. Also allows to set exceptions for particular cell numbers - they will ring even if cell is silent. Lastly, allows to set mobile to silent by a simple click on widget along with entering for how much duration it should stay silent.

A Online Radio -> Radio app to browse tons of channels across the world

Ebo birthday -> Exports b'day from FB, Cell contact and send multiple reminders when the due dayis to come

Been waiting for the Froyo update, but it doesn't seem like we'll be seeing it in Sept like it was promised. Thinking about doing it myself, but worried about messing things up.

I have had a HTC HD2 since its launch (Windows Mobile) but yesterday managed to install the Desire HD android ROM on it making the device dual boot giving the best of both worlds. Amazing, I have a ROM from a device yet to be released working on a device which was meant to run a different OS all together.

Early impressions, the HTC browser with flash 10.1 on this froyo build is blazingly fast compared to the WM versions and even giving a PC with broadband a run for its money.

This is my first exposure to Android so obviously a big learning curve to go through but thats what makes the whole experience so interesting.
