Blessed with immense firepower in the batting department, England could well spoil the party for many teams regarded as the top contenders for the World Cup.

England are once again heading into a World Cup with little expectation from fans and media. Being placed at 5th in the ICC ODI rankings is a fair reflection of a team with plenty of ability in the likes of Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad but too little to show for it in terms of results. With some wonderful performances as well as horrific ones against Sri Lanka where they lost 5-2 in November/December, anything is possible with England. In 2014, England won only 9 ODIs out of 25.

With newly appointed Eoin Morgan at the helm, a more aggressive approach is expected which could be beneficial with the firepower at England's disposal.

World Cup Record

1975 - (England) Semi-finalists

1979 - (England) Finalists

1983 - (England) Semi-finalists

1987 - (India/Pakistan) Finalists

1992 - (Australia/New Zealand) Finalists

1996 - (India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka) Quarter-Finalists

1999 - (England) Group stage

2003 - (South Africa/Zimbabwe) Group stage

2007 - (West Indies) Super 8s

2011 - (India/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh) Quarter-Finalists

Squad

Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler (wk), Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Eoin Morgan (capt), Joe Root, James Taylor, James Tredwell, Chris Woakes.

Top 3 Players to watch

Moeen Ali

Batting average : 35 Strike rate : 110

Bowling average : 43 Economy : 5

An aggressive batsman who bowls off-spin which has so far troubled India and Sri Lanka. He was in magnificent form in Sri Lanka and has real potential to light up the World Cup with his all-round performance.

Jos Buttler

Batting average : 31 Strike rate : 116

A superb hitter with power and finesse. Has shown the ability to play match changing innings. Teams will be vary of him as he can devastate in the last 10 overs.

Chris Jordan

Bowling average : 30 Economy : 5.7

Batting average : 13 Strike rate : 91

A fine athlete who can bowl 90 mph. Could be a handful if the pitches have some bounce. Also a brutal hitter as shown in the West Indies.

Prediction

Although many have written off England due to their poor form and conservative approach to batting, with the talent in their squad they could easily be a shock contender.

With a batting line up with class and power and quality pace bowling, England are the dark horses in conditions which should suit them.
