Possibly the greatest test of strength of character for Pakistan's new found confidence awaits them on Day 3. McCullum has so far been absolutley ruthless in his approach with Kane Williamson not far behind. Pakistan will look for early wickets tomorrow morning or mentally prepare themselves for a very hard few days ahead in this Test match.
The third Test, in Sharjah, has now become a must-win affair for New Zealand to avoid a series defeat while Pakistan will be looking to ensure that the series does not end in a result other than a Pakistan victory after their exploits on these very stadia against Australia not too long ago. Given the nature of the Sharjah pitch, Pakistan’s spinners will be looking forward to bowling on it and New Zealand may very well have to undergo a trial by fire if they are to level the series.
The final day offers much uncertainty as the fourth day ended with the game evenly poised and both teams will be looking to make the most of the situation. Pakistan, for their part, will look to wipe New Zealand’s tail as soon as possible and chase down a relatively small total. New Zealand would feel that they have a fighting total and given the nature of the pitch, batting fourth will certainly not be something Pakistan’s batsmen would be looking forward to. For the first time in the last four Test matches, the final day will begin with the result not already a foregone conclusion.
As Pakistan take to the field tomorrow, they have a mammoth task on their hand if they wish to win the game instead of just being satisfied with a draw. New Zealand still lead by over a hundred runs and Pakistan have their backs to wall as their tail is now exposed to New Zealand’s bowlers. Sarfraz Ahmad is still in the middle and he will need to play the innings of his life to save the game for Pakistan.
Pakistan’s bowling lineup, after proving too much for New Zealand in the previous game, looked less at ease as they toiled all day for just three wickets. All three completed partnerships were in excess of 70. New Zealand will look to build up on their strong platform and bat on till they feel that they no longer need to worry about their total not being enough, an area where visiting teams have been found wanting in the UAE in recent times.
Once again, the sun shone bright in the UAE and so did the Pakistan team. New Zealand were pushed further towards a heavy defeat after what proved to be another easy outing for the hosts. The result is pretty much obvious and tomorrow's day of play, for all practical purposes, now remains a mere formality.
