Almost a decade back Jagmohan Dalmiya was the most powerful man in world cricket.Undisputed King of BCCI,Dalmiya had just engineered a defeat of the powerful politician and union minister Sharad Pawar and installed his protege Ranbir Singh Mahindra as BCCI chief. It was sometime after that a certain Lalit Modi successfully lobbied with the then Rajashthan CM to change rules which helped him become the President of Rajasthan cricket, which was until then ruled by the Dalmiya supporting Rungta family.
After a year,Modi through his hectic lobbying and his negotiation skills swung the vote in favour Pawar in the BCCI.
Over the years he consolidated his position in the BCCI,but it was his spat with Shashi Tharoor and later on Srinivasan which forced him to leave BCCI.Srinivasan is today at the same place where Dalmiya was a decade back.
The Pawars,The Manohars and the Dalmiyas are now forming a united front againist the Chennai strongman. There is no denying that Srinivasan, because of his brazen style of functioning has rubbed many powerful people the wrong way.His desire to consolidate more power has seen the very controversial BIG 3 proposal being moved at the ICC.The proposal, which will concentrate the power at ICC in the hands of 3 boards is diagonally opposite to what BCCI worked for in 90s.It was the hard work of Dalmiya and Bindra which abolished the veto at ICC.Srinivasan who made his way into cricket only during the beginning of 2000s seems to be unaware of the forsty relations that BCCI had with ECB and CA.
Tommorow the Supreme court of India will decide whether Lalit modi(BAnned for life by BCCI) can become the President of RCA.If Modi returns,he will find himself at a similar place that he was a decade back.BCCI ruled by the iron hand of a single man and powerful individuals looking to oust that man from BCCI.It will take the negotiation skills of Modi again to bring on the same page all the detractors of the present BCCI regime. For a united effort is needed to change this regime, not only for the better of Indian cricket but world cricket as well. Not to mention the small matter of the vote of RCA in BCCI elections.
