Pakistan Innings

A tale of two innings for Pakistan, split between the partnership shared between the openers Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed, and those that came in after Hafeez departed. The opening pair put on 143 off 24 overs before Hafeez was bowled by Jadeja as he looked to accelerate. It was a good knock by Hafeez, who scored 76 from 74 balls.

This appeared to be the turning point for the Pakistan innings, as Azhar Ali same in. Azhar Ali’s confused innings ended in equally curious fashion as he was run out charging down the wicket looking for a non-existent single.

Younis Khan came in at number four and was nearly run out backing-up by Jadeja after a straight drive by Jamshed. He was out soon after, adding just 10 runs to the scorecard. He looked to have had an under-edge on the sweep shot, but too fine for the umpire to spot. Misbah-ul-Haq was trapped lbw by Ashwin for 2 and Pakistan stuttered to 182/4.

At the other end, Nasir Jamshed continued to carry the innings and found some support from Shoaib Malik (24) in a 28-run partnership for the fifth wicket. It was Jamshed who eventually departed for a magnificently-crafted 106, smartly stumped by Dhoni after an initial fumble, leaving Pakistan 210/5 off 41.1 overs.

Kamran Akmal lasted just two deliveries before being caught at slip by Jadeja. Shoaib Malik and Umar Gul shared a useful 7th wicket partnership of 26 to carry Pakistan to 236. Ajmal contributed 7 and the remaining batsmen failed to trouble to scorers as Pakistan were bundled out for 250 in 48.3 overs.

Indian Innings

The Indian openers looked to build a platform in their pursuit of 251, Sehwag displaying his usually positivity, Gambhir more circumspect. Junaid looked in good form again as he nipped the ball both ways, troubling both of the batsmen. Gambhir’s short vigil ended in the 10th over as he inside edged the ball onto the stumps off Junaid, who was rewarded for his good bowling.

Kohli, who had been looking out of sorts in recent times, walked out at number three but lasted just nine balls as Junaid picked up another wicket, with Kamran pulling off a stunning catch diving to his left.

Gul then bowled an in-dipper to remove the dangerous Sehwag, hitting in front of all three stumps and leaving Bowden with an easy lbw decision, leaving India 59/3 and 11 runs later, he had Yuvraj caught behind. It was a good spell of bowling by Gul, who had targeted Yuvraj with the short ball, and went around the wicket to prevent him from freeing his arms.

Hafeez, who was in the middle of a tight spell of 5.5 overs for 16 runs, removed Raina for 18(42), Kamran with a sharp piece of wicket-keeping stumping the left-hander, who had lunged forward to negate the spin of Hafeez. Ashwin was the next to go, after scoring just 3, stumped by Kamran who had a good day behind the stumps, leaving India 103/6.

Jadeja came in next and lasted 23 deliveries before he was caught trying to loft the ball over Junaid Khan at mid-off, who took the catch. If India were in the hunt before, the 40th over bowled by Ajmal effectively ended the match as a contest as he took three wickets, that of Jadeja, Dinda and Kumar to leave 9 down with the required run rate at over 12.

Younis Khan took a flying catch to his right at slip to take Sharma, but the third umpire adjudged it to be a bump ball.

There was a lull close to the end of the innings, as Dhoni looked to bat to the end and the captain completed his third consecutive 50, but Sharma was bowled by Junaid to give Pakistan the series victory.
