With the nightmare of the LOI format lurking in the back of their minds, a slightly new look Pakistan team took on a spirited Bangladesh side in the first Test match of the series at the Khulna. Sami Aslam made a much awaited debut and the veteran Saeed Ajmal was replaced by a combination of Yasir Shah and Zulfiqar Babar.
On a pitch which showed signs of spin and appeared very difficult to score off, Bangladesh batsmen showed some enterprise to make sure that whilst the runs were not coming at the rate they and their supporters had got used to in the previous LOI games, the wickets were not lost to give the home side the chance to take the game away from Pakistan on the second day.
Pakistan fielders did their best to aid the Bangladesh batsmen in their task of survival, dropping no less than two crucial chances which if taken could well have changed the complexion of the game on day 1. Mominul Haque (80) who was the last man dismissed on day 1 was dropped by Babar off his own bowling on 17, whilst Tamim was let off by Mohammad Hafeez off the same bowler.
In summary, Pakistan bowlers bowled with control and in a manner expected from a top class Test outfit. Apart from Junaid Khan, each of Wahab Riaz, Zulfiqar Babar, Yasir Shah and Mohammad Hafeez picked up a wicket whilst giving away few runs.
The wicket is taking spin from day 1 and as top scorer from Bangladesh Mominal Haque remarked, "Surviving here is easy, but scoring runs is difficult." The challenge for the home side on Day 2 would be to take the score to the 350 mark and beyond. Pakistan, on the otter hand, will hope and strive for a better effort by their fielders to ensure that they have a 1st innings total which their batsmen can overhaul and exceed with ease.
