A fighting knock of 168* by Alastair Cook along with able support from Moeen Ali and Ian Bell thwarts Pakistan's spin and pace attack on Day 3.

Overnight: Pakistan 523-8 dec (Shoaib Malik 245, Shafiq 107) , England 56-0 (Cook 39*)

First Session: The home team began on a positive note and scored at a good pace too as Moeen Ali and Alastair Cook brought up the century opening stand. The Pakistan bowlers looked helpless while Misbah kept shuffling his bowlers around until Imran Khan managed to get Moeen Ali caught behind. England were 116-1 at this stage and the home team applied good pressure to make the England batsmen nervous.

Shan Masood spilled a chance at silly-point off Zulfiqar Babar but it was a tough one. Ian Bell was the fortunate party as he stuck around despite struggling against Pakistan's spinners. England went into lunch probably the happier of the sides on 122-1 and trailing by 401 runs.

Second Session: Pakistan did not have much luck in the session. An edge falling short of slips, both reviews used and a few deliveries from Wahab going past the bat. England otherwise remained strong as Alastair Cook passed his 28th Test hundred. Ian Bell continued to be flummoxed against the spin off Zulfiqar but looked fairly comfortable against the pacers. England ended the session without losing a wicket and adding 75 runs to reach 197-1.

Third Session: Pakistan took the new ball in the last session and brought the fast bowlers on but again, they had very little luck. Ian Bell grew in confidence and reached his fifty. Pakistan wasted another review when Wahab Riaz banged in a short one to Ian Bell which rushed through to the wicket-keeper. There wasn't enough evidence and the to overturn the decision though. Cook and Bell bought up their 150 runs partnership before Fawad Alam gave cook a life, dropping a fairly straightforward chance at deep square leg. The breakthrough finally came when Wahab dismissed Ian Bell, caught by Mohammad Hafeez at point. Mark Wood came in as nightwatchman and Wahab swiftly sent him back too. Root and Cook saw out the remainder of the day without further alarms.

Summary: So a chastening day for Pakistan in the field, similar to the two already experienced by the visitors. They will need to hope the pitch deteriorates more on day 4 to give themselves any chance of trying to win this game. An excellent innings by Cook and he will look to push on tomorrow. The late wickets has given Pakistan some hope but the pitch remains incredibly good for batting.

Fall of wickets:

Moeen Ali 1-116 (40.2 overs)
Ian Bell 2-281 (105.3 overs)
Mark Wood 3-285 (107.4 overs)
