Pakistan bowlers toiled hard on day 4 but to no avail as England, lead by Alastair Cook's 263, ensured safety for England.

 By PakPassion.net Staff (16th October, 2015)

Overnight: England 290/3 in 110.0 overs (AN Cook 168, JE Root 3), Pakistan 523-8 Dec (Shoaib Malik 245, Asad Shafiq 107)

First Session: The day began on a similar note to the previous days, heavily in favour of the batsmen. Cook continued on his merry way in an extended opening session, while Joe Root brought up his own half century too. The only moment of hope for Pakistan was when Imran Khan jagged one into Root's pads - the loud appeal turned down by the umpire and hawkeye showed the ball to just be clipping the stumps on review.

It proved to be another fruitless session for Pakistan. Alastair Cook brought up his 3rd Test 200 while Joe Root also moved serenely past 50. At lunch England were 400/3, just 123 runs behind.

Second Session: Joe Root missed out on what should have been a straightforward ton when he nicked behind off Rahat Ali for 85. It ended a partnership of 141 and brought Bairstow to the crease. Wahab Riaz then produced an excellent spell on the benign pitch to get rid of Bairstow LBW.

Cook ploughed on though, and at tea England were 468/5, with their skipper unbeaten on 237. He was joined by Ben Stokes who would probably look to up the rate in the final session.

Third Session: Cook continued to motor along in the final session, crossing 250 while Ben Stokes also reached 50. Stokes became the first player in the match to be dismissed by a spinner when Malik bowled him for 57. Cook then finally fell for a magnificent 263 when a sweep off Malik was taken at square leg. Jos Buttler looked to up the ate, going on the attack against Babar, but the bowler got his first wicket of the game when Buttler was caught on the off-side.

Rashid and Broad saw out the remainder of the day and England finished on 569/8.

Summary: A slightly more successful day for the bowlers but the overriding feat was still Alastair Cook's monumental 263. The draw appears the most likely result but Pakistan will need to ensure they don't throw any wickets away when they come out to bat, as that now appears to be the only way there could be a result in this game.

Fall of wickets:
4-426 (Root, 152.2 ov),
5-443 (Bairstow, 161.3 ov),
6-534 (Stokes, 184.1 ov),
7-549 (Cook, 190.1 ov),
8-563 (Buttler, 193.5 ov)
