Pakistan can thank bad-light for saving them blushes after they suffered a familiar batting collapse on Day 5.

Report: 1st Test Day 5 : Match drawn after thrilling final day

Result: Match drawn

Overnight: 569/8 (AU Rashid 6*, SCJ Broad 0*, 196.3 ov)

First Session: Pakistan came into the field this morning almost hoping that England innings would continue until Lunch but matters were taken out of their hands when England declared on 598/9 with a lead of 75. This left the Pakistan openers with an uncomfortable hour or so to face what appeared to be a rejuvenated England side.

The effects of that were felt immediately by Shan Masood and 1st innings double centurion Shoaib Malik who both departed in quick succession leaving Pakistan at 3/2. If it hadn't been for some sensible batting by Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan, things would have been worse but Pakistan went into the relative safety of the dressing room at lunch on 35/2.

Second Session: Hafeez and Younis looked steady after lunch, but a suicidal run from Hafeez resulted in his downfall, as a direct hit from Stokes saw him well short. Pakistan looked to be in a bit of bother at 47/3 but surely the cool heads of their stalwarts Misbah and Younis would settle things down.

There were a few scares along the way, particularly when Misbah was given out caught. Upon review, the replay showed no edge and despite the fact that it was umpire's call on LBW, it was given not out on the basis the umpire had given him out caught. Unusual, but Misbah survived. He and Younis took Pakistan into lunch on 102/3 with a lead of 27.

Third Session: The final session proved more fruitful for England and in particular for Adil Rashid. He picked up his first Test wicket when Younis top edged a cut to cover. Rashid was in the middle of an excellent spell, with plenty of spin and drift, and was rewarded when he found Shafiq's outside edge. Sarfraz Ahmed walked in and played his shots, looking to attack the spinner with sweeps.

Misbah crossed 50 but then a rush of blood resulted in him being bowled by Moeen. Wahab didn't last long either and Pakistan were 90 ahead with just three wickets left. Rashid then ripped through the tail with some brilliant leg-spin to dismiss Pakistan for a paltry 173, leaving England just 99 to win.

Battling against the light, England sent out Buttler and Moeen. The pair looked to attack everything that the two spinners, opening the bowling, had to offer. Buttler fell LBW before Moeen and Stokes both holed out to fielders on the boundary. Bairstow also hit some lusty blows before being out stumped. With England needing just 25 more to win, the umpires deemed it to be too dark, and the match was drawn.

Summary: So what had been a turgid Test match ended with a fascinating final session. England, and particularly Rashid, bowled beautifully on Day 5 and were helped by some ordinary shots from the Pakistani batsmen. The visitors tried valiantly to beat the light but they can go into the next Test with their heads held high.

Pakistan will hope that the inclusion of Yasir Shah for the next Test will prove to be the difference, but a pitch with some more life in it will provide a much better spectacle, despite the entertainment of the 5th day.
