Pakistan Captain puts on a batting masterclass to take Pakistan to a comfortable 282/4 at end of Day 1.

By PakPassion.net Staff (22nd October, 2015)

Toss: Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat

Teams:

Pakistan - Mohammad Hafeez, Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq*, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed†, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah, Zulfiqar Babar, Imran Khan

England - AN Cook*, MM Ali, IR Bell, JE Root, JM Bairstow, BA Stokes, JC Buttler†, AU Rashid, SCJ Broad, MA Wood, JM Anderson

First Session: The importance of the toss was reflected by the reactions of Misbah-Ul-Haq and Alastair Cook, as Misbah almost smiled apologetically as he once again elected to bat first. Mohammad Hafeez and Shan Masood settled in on a pitch that appeared to have very few demons. Masood in particular looked very fluent and hit a few pleasant early boundaries. The pair put on 50 before Hafeez was caught at short leg off Moeen Ali, who had been brought on early to specifically break the partnership.

Shoaib Malik walked in but didn't last long. He was perhaps slightly unfortunate as a short ball from Stokes was clipped straight to the fielder at short leg, Jonny Bairstow taking an excellent catch. Shan Masood continued though and shortly after brought up his half century - an excellent innings under pressure. At lunch, Pakistan were 85/2

Second Session: The session began badly as Shan Masood nicked Anderson behind from the very first ball. It left Pakistan in a spot of bother but it brought the experienced pair of Misbah and Younis to the crease. The pair played beautifully and nullified the England attack, with Younis passing Graham Gooch in the all time runscorers list in the process.

Boundaries came sporadically but included a lofted six from the skipper off Rashid. By the end of the session, Younis had past 50 with Misbah closing in also, and Pakistan were 178/3.

Third Session: As with the previous session, Pakistan lost a crucial wicket early. Mark Wood bowled a fantastic aggressive spell, keeping things tight, and was rewarded as Younis nicked one down leg side. Asad Shafiq joined Misbah and the pair prospered and their partnership crossed 50. It was fairly slow going but Misbah let loose during one over off Rashid, hitting consecutive sixes.

The captain seemed determined to get to his 100 by the close, and in the final launched two more sixes and then a reverse sweep took him to 3 figures. A fabulous captain's knock to make it Pakistan's day.

Summary: England toiled hard after losing the toss and at one point were in the ascendancy with Pakistan 85/3. Misbah stood in their way though, and two excellent partnerships with Younis and Shafiq respectively, took Pakistan to 282/4 at the close. They will look to push on tomorrow towards 500 before unleashing Yasir Shah on the England batsmen.

Fall of wickets:

2-58 (Shoaib Malik, 18.4 ov)
