A familiar late order collapse by Pakistan and obdurate resistance by England were the main features of an eventful 2nd Day.

By PakPassion.net Staff (23rd October, 2015)

Overnight: Pakistan 282/4 (Misbah-ul-Haq 102, Asad Shafiq 46)

First Session: The day couldn't have got off to a worse start for Pakistan, as Misbah-Ul-Haq, the centurion from Day 1, was dimissed LBW by Stuart Broad. The review showed the ball clipping the stumps and England had a vital breakthrough.

Asad Shafiq was joined by Sarfraz Ahmed and the pair negotiated some hostile bowling from the visitors. Shafiq brought up his half century while Sarfraz also picked up a few boundaries to bring up a 50 partnership.

Moeen Ali got the breakthrough for England, first getting Sarfraz caught at mid-on before Wahab Riaz played a reckless shot to sky one straight up in the air. Yasir Shah ably supported Shafiq for a while but he fell to Rashid and Babar was yorked by Wood.

Shafiq looked to attack with the last man in but was caught at mid-wicket, ending his excellent knock of 83. Pakistan were all out for 378.

Second Session: The threat of Yasir Shah was no doubt on everyone's minds, but it was the pacers that caused the early damage for Pakistan. Moeen Ali clipped a ball from Wahab to short leg where Shan Masood took a fantastic catch. Shortly after, Ian Bell's sketchy form continued when Imran Khan fond his edge and Sarfraz pouched the catch.

It brought England's best batsmen, Cook and Root together, who saw off the opening bowlers without too many alarms, despite another fiery spell from Wahab. Misbah soon turned to the spinners and Yasir Shah immediately found spin. Babar caused an alarm when the bowl rolled on to the stumps but failed to dislodge the bails - Cook the fortunate batsman.

The pair played out the rest of the session relatively comfortably, leaving the visitors 105/2 at tea and Pakistan with plenty to ponder.

Third Session: Yasir Shah came into the game early in the session, as some excellent captaincy from Misbah resulted in Cook being caught at leg slip for 65. Joe Root continued to plunder runs though, two consecutive sumptuous drives off Wahab probably the highlight. Jonny Bairstow was beaten several times by Yasir Shah, but found things more comfortable against Babar, smashing him for 6 over long off. The pair saw England safely through to the close on 182/3.

Summary: A good fightback from England. They dismissed Pakistan quickly in the morning and then Cook and Root played very well to negate the threat of Yasir Shah. Cook eventually fell to the spinner but Pakistan will perhaps have expected more from their trump card. As the game moves into Day 3, the home side will hope the wicket provides enough help for them to get a lead going into the 2nd innings.
