A tense finish to a fantastic Test match sees Pakistan take a 1-0 lead in the three Test series

By PakPassion.net Staff (26th October, 2015)

Overnight: England 130/3 (JE Root 59*, JM Bairstow 6*, 54 ov)

First Session: It was always going to be a tricky day for England trying to see off the threat of Pakistan's spinners on a Day 5 pitch. Root and Bairstow did well for the first 10 overs of the morning, playing the ball with soft hands and away from the numerous fielders around the bat.

The floodgates opened when Zulfiqar Babar found Root's outside edge from one that spun sharply, and Younis Khan at slip took a simple catch. Shortly after, Yasir Shah's googly was too good for Bairstow, fizzing through the gate and crushing into the stumps to leave England 5 down. Buttler was the next to fall - a beautiful delivery from Yasir taking his outside edge, and Younis Khan equalled the record for the most catches in an innings by a Pakistani (4).

By lunch, England were 187/6 and the home side would expect to wrap things up in the next session.

Second Session: Imran Khan found Stokes' edge early after lunch to leave England 7 down. It wasn't all plain sailing for Pakistan from then on though as Rashid and Broad provided some stiff resistance. The pair put on a partnership of 60 before Misbah brought Wahab back into the attack. The left-armer produced a searing yorker which got through Broad's defences and put Pakistan within two wickets of victory.

Third Session: And then it all changed. Rashid and Wood played incredibly well to set the nerves jangling for Pakistan. They batted almost 30 overs and put on 55 to take the game into the final hour. Just as England were dreaming of doing the impossible, Babar struck. He got the ball to take Wood's glove and the catch was taken, ending a magnificent valiant partnership (the longest 9th wicket partnership in Test history).

Anderson and Rashid continued to defy Pakistan. With less than 7 overs remaining, Yasir Shah got the final wicket as Rashid drove loosely into the covers to spark celebrations and great relief for Pakistan.

Summary: Overall an excellent performance by Pakistan throughout this Test match. England deserve great praise for the efforts on Day 5 and they ultimately came so close to drawing the game.

We now move to Sharjah where Pakistan just need a draw for a series victory.
