A day of mixed fortunes sees Pakistan slightly ahead with Mohammad Hafeez playing a crucial innings.

First Session: Another crucial opening session on Day 3, and it was Pakistan that struck first. James Taylor, the star batsman from yesterday, fell to Rahat Ali, the outside edge being well snaffled by Sarfraz. Jonny Bairstow also fell shortly after, bowled by a Zulfiqar arm ball to leave England 245/6.
Samit Patel and Adil Rashid defied the Pakistani bowlers, with Patel in particular scoring freely and taking advantage of any loose balls. Just as they were about to see England through to lunch, Shoaib Malik struck. An inside edge from Rashid was brilliantly taken at short leg by Azhar Ali to leave the visitors 285/7 at lunch.
Second Session: An absolute jaffa from Yasir Shah straight after lunch ended Samit Patel's resistance, the ball pitching outside leg, spinning sharply and taking the off bail. Malik dismissed Anderson in the next over and then ended the innings with Stokes' wicket, who had come out despite an injured collar bone. It resulted in England being bowled out for 306, career best figures for Malik of 4-33, and a lead for the visitors of 72.
Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez began in very circumspect fashion, scoring just 8 in the first 8 overs. Hafeez survived a close call when he had a caught behind decision overturned on review. After that the pair opened up, particularly against the spinners and by tea Pakistan were in a strong position on 58/0, trailing by just 14.
Third Session: Pakistan were proceeding well when Azhar Ali suffered a running between wickets failure, giving England a much needed breakthrough. Shoaib Malik was next and his troubles against fast-bowlers continued with a duck against Anderson. A period of calm followed his dismissal but just as Pakistan were within 3 overs of close of play, Broad induced a no-shot from Younis Khan which resulted in him being LBW. Pakistan ended the day on 146/3 with nightwatchman Rahat Ali staunchly protecting his wicket and Mohammad Hafeez patiently placed on 97.
Summary: Great fightback by Pakistan restricted the lead to 72 and then proceeded to wipe out the lead without loss of wicket before a familiar mini-collapse. Day 4 of this final Test match could see a result but Pakistan will hope to prolong the game and also to put on a fighting total which they will hope to defend against England and win the series.
