Pakistan Innings

Captain Hafeez decided to make some noticeable changes to a winning side. Jamshed, Junaid, and Irfan were placed on the bench; Tanvir made a return to the side with Asad Ali and Haris Sohail making their T20I debuts.

Pakistan came in with a steady start; Shehzad scored a four off the second ball of the first over and struck again in the third over. Hafeez was also looking to attack, he smacked Badree for four, but the bowler had the last laugh with the very next ball. The Captain departed for 10. Amin walked in at number three, and much was expected of him after his heroic 47 yesterday, however almost 3 overs later, he left the crease after hitting a ball back into Darren Sammy’s hands.

Debutant Haris Sohail walked in, but failed to make much of an impact. He departed just 1.5 overs later after scoring one. With this wayward start, the pressure was on Pakistan. Umar Akmal walked in with a well settled Shehzad on the other end.

Both players were taking it a ball at a time. Quick singles and an occasional boundary. After hitting scoring a boundary, Shehzad tried to pull a disgruntled Pollard, but he hit into the air and was sharply caught by Simmons. With Shehzad gone after making a solid 44, Afridi walked in. With the usual antics, he was restless and departed very shortly after scoring 6.

Umar Akmal played responsibly, and had to watch his partners depart one after the other. Hammad Azam went for one, Tanvir went for a duck, and Zulfiqar Babar came into support Umar.

Off the mark with a four, Zulfiqar Babar ran well between the wickets, and Akmal struck a few boundaries taking Pakistan to a total of 135, just five runs below, what was believed to be a par-score.

Fall Of Wickets
1-24 Hafeez 3.6 overs
2-39 Amin, 6.1 overs
3-42 Sohail, 7.6 overs
4-78 Shehzad, 12.5 overs
5-96 Afridi, 15.5 overs
6-109 Azam, 17.2 overs
7-109 Tanvir, 17.5 overs

West Indies Innings

West Indies started cautiously start as their openers came out to bat in a bid to achieve a modest yet fighting total of 136. Sohail Tanvir, who was called up for the T20Is, justified his selection, by getting rid of the out of form, Johson Charles for a duck. His miserable stay at the wicket lasted for 9 deliveries. Chris Gayle continued his own dismal form, when he caught by Shahid Afridi off Mohammad Hafeez for 1(3).

Sohail Tanvir struck again - this time to haunt Marlon Samuels for 1(4). He was caught behind by Umar Akmal. Dwayne Bravo struck a four off him in his next over and the power-play ended with the score of 13/3. The hero from the last game, Zulfiqar Babar, gave away two runs in his first over. Shahid Afridi was then brought into the attack and straight away outfoxed Lendl Simmons for 3(16). West Indies were in tatters, when a surprise in the shape of Sunil Narine, was sent up the batting order, to disturb the bowling attack.

Shahid Afridi was taken to the cleaners in his next over, first by Dwayne Bravo’s six and then by Sunil Narine, who swatted him out of the park. That over yielded 16 runs for the home side. Shahid Afridi was taken out of the attack, but the flurry of boundaries didn’t stop. Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine managed two fours each off Asad Ali and Saeed Ajmal. Saeed Ajmal had the last laugh, though as he got rid of the dangerous looking, Sunil Narine, when he was caught by Umar Amin, but not before he had done the damage. He scored a well-needed 28(16).

Kieron Pollard made his way to the crease, with a lot of work to be done. He picked up Zulfiqar Babar and fired on all cylinders. 6,4,6,4 off the first four balls off his over and two balls out of the park were sent by him, which had to be retrieved from the airport. Zulfiqar Babar got his revenge, when Kieron Pollard mistimed one to Umar Amin. He departed after scoring a quick-fire 23(10). On the very next ball, Dwayne Bravo, left the scene, after he was caught by Hammad Azam for 35(44).

Shahid Afridi then came back and was struck for two fours by Christopher Barnwell. He was run-out for 10(5). Darren Sammy was out in the next over to Saeed Ajmal. He was caught by Shahid Afridi for 1(4). Tino Best swatted Saeed Ajmal for a six right away. It was too much to do in the last over off Sohail Tanvir, who kept his calm and handed Pakistan a 11-run win to wrap up the series 2-0.

Fall Of Wickets
1-2 Charles, 1.4 overs
2-2 Gayle, 2.2 overs
3-4 Samuels, 3.1 overs
4-17 Simmons, 7.6 overs
5-64 Narine, 13.3 overs
6-94 Pollard, 16.5 overs
7-94 Bravo, 16.6 overs
8-105 Barnwell, 17.6 overs
9-105 Sammy, 18.3 overs

Summary

An excellent batting display lead by Umar Akmal on a pitch which was not conducive to stroke play saw Pakistan get to a respectable 135 - the West Indies batting were unnerved by some early strikes by Tanvir and then by Hafeez, Babar and Ajmal as they finished the job. A satisfactory end for Pakistan's tour of the West Indies with 2-0 victory in the T20 series (after a 3-1 win in the ODI series) and an excellent outing for some of Pakistan's newer players. With this win, Pakistan now have the best win ratio of all teams in T20Is for which credit must go to the team and its management.
