In the opening match of the England Under-19s Tri-Nation Tournament, Bangladesh were asked to have a bat by Sami Aslam. After a solid start to reach 23 runs without any loss, five wickets fell in dramatic fashion as they collapsed to 54/5. While three of the wickets fell to Pakistani fast-bowlers, Bangladesh didn’t help themselves as there were also two run-outs in the first 17 overs of the match. Just when a partnership was building between Mohammad Jashimmudin and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, which allowed the total to reach 78 without the loss of any further wickets, Hussain Talat and Zafar Gohar struck for Pakistan, causing a further demise to 79/7. Bangladesh showed further resilience, however, as Shanto and Rifat Pradhan continued the innings until Mohammad Aftab had Shanto caught by the skipper, Aslam, for a top-score of 30. Bangladesh were sitting on123/8, with over 11 overs yet to be bowled. As seemed to be the case in their innings, with one wicket came another, as Jubair Hossain registered the third duck of the innings as he also became the third victom of a run-out. A couple of extras later (total of 29 in the innings), promising youngster Hussain Talat picked up his second wicket and ended Bangladesh’s innings at 145 in 42.1 overs.
Fall Of Wickets:
1-23 Sumon, 3.6 overs
2-24 Sheik, 4.3 overs
3-37 Islam, 9.2 overs
4-42 Hasan, 11.5 overs
5-54 Hossain, 16.4 overs
6-78 Jashimuddin, 24.4 overs
7-79 Sayeem, 27.6 overs
8-123 Shanto, 38.2 overs
9-125 Hossain, 39.1 overs
10-145 Pradhan, 42.1 overs
Requiring 146 to win off of 50 overs, Pakistan must have felt that they had the two points from the match in their pocket already. They were in for a rude awakening, however, as Rifat Pradhan showed that Bangladesh weren’t going to go down without a fight. He disturbed the stumps twice as Pakistan sunk to 18/2 in 7.4 overs. The skipper was the next to go as Sami Aslam was bowled by Mehedy Hasan with the score remaining unchanged. It would only get worse as Shayan Jahangir fell lbw to give Hasan his second wicket. Pakistan were 20/4 in 10.5 overs. What seemed to be an easy chase had turned into a disaster. Kamran Ghulam and Hussain Talat rebuilt the innings for Pakistan, ensuring no wicket fell for the next six overs. They couldn’t prevent the falling of rain, though, as the players had to go off the field.
Fall Of Wickets:
1-3 Butt, 1.3 overs
2-18 Haq, 7.4 overs
3-18 Aslam, 8.2 overs
4-20 Jahangir, 10.5 overs
Match Summary:
After 14 wickets fell for 183 runs in 59.1 overs, we were in for an exciting finish to the opening match of the England Under-19s Tri-Nation Tournament. With the home team holding the advantage of being familiar in their conditions, it was always going to be intriguing to see which team from Pakistan or Bangladesh rose to the occasion to give them a fight. It was the bowlers who did the rising though, as batsmen from both teams left a lot to be desired. Some sloppy play with three run-outs in Bangladesh’s innings as well as 29 extras by the Pakistani bowlers showed the rust that both teams have to overcome. Perhaps it was appropriate that the match was washed out and each team walked away with one point. It is Bangladesh who will have more time to recover as Pakistan must regroup quick before facing England tomorrow.
