Pakistan are all set to play a 2 day practice game against the UAE national side as part of their preparations for the upcoming series against South Africa. The high profile "home" series for Pakistan will have special significance as Pakistan will look to avenge a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Proteas and it appears that the PCB is sparing no opportunity to get its players ready for the serious challenge of facing the World's top ranked side.
In exclusive remarks to PakPassion.net, the former Pakistan fast bowler and current coach of the UAE national side, Aaqib Javed has confirmed that arrangements are in progress for this game, stating that "Pakistan will play a 2-day practice match against UAE on 9th and 10th October. The UAE team will face, what we expect to be, a full strength Pakistan team in a 2 innings a side game. We expect the game to be played at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi which is also the venue of Pakistan's first Test against South Africa.
Aaqib played 22 Tests and 163 One Day Internationals for Pakistan between 1988 and 1998 and collected 54 and 182 scalps along the way. He has had a productive career since his retirement from the game. He initially turned himself into a bowling coach and conducted sessions at the Lahore Regional Academy as well as the National Stadium, Karachi. In 2009 he was announced as Pakistan Bowling Coach, and after the conclusion of his stint, he decided to take over as Head Coach of the United Arab Emirates Cricket Team on a 3 year contract in February 2012. His side recently took part in the in the Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers. Despite the UAE qualifying automatically by virtue of being hosts of the tournament, they reached the Final before losing out to Afghanistan. Aaqib will therefore be confident his side can put up a strong showing against Pakistan in the upcoming practice game.
It could be said that Aaqib's close connections with the Pakistan cricket establishment had a role behind the arrangement of these games. However, the PCB also deserves praise for demonstrating their willingness to assist the Associate nations by playing against them on a regular basis. Whilst many of the other top teams rarely play the Associates outside of global tournaments, Pakistan have recently competed against Afghanistan, Scotland and Ireland and have now taken this step to help the progression of the UAE National cricket side.
The series against South Africa commences in earnest on 14th October with the start of the 1st Test match in Abu Dhabi, with the 2nd Test match scheduled to start on the 23rd of October. The 2 teams then play 3 ODIs in Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi starting 30th of October. The tour reaches its conclusion on 15th of November, with 2 T20I games played in Dubai.
