Pakistan A 1st Innings

Pakistan resumed their innings on the 3rd and final day from 230/4 with Asad Shafiq and Umar Amin on the crease. It seemed to be a test of nerves in the morning session with the South African bowlers trying to make a statement. Indeed, it did not take long for Philander to dismantle Amin’s stumps who batted for 39 balls scoring 12 runs. That was not all for Philander and he struck again in the 86th over dismissing Asad Shafiq with the total on 245.

From there on, Sohaib Maqsood joined forces with Mohammad Rizwan and both batsmen compiled a good partnership till the end of innings. They managed to maintain a healthy strike rate throughout and hit four boundaries each. At the end of the allotted 100 overs, Pakistan A had scored 311/6.

Fall of wickets
1-106 (Ahmed Shehzad, 33.5 overs)
2-138 (Shan Masood, 46.6 overs)
3-162 (Faisal Iqbal, 55.3 overs)
4-204 (Azhar Ali, 68.6 overs)
5-234 (Umar Amin, 81.5 overs)
6-245 (Asad Shafiq, 85.1 overs)

South Africans 2nd Innings

South Africa started their 2nd innings by sending in JP Duminy and Faf Du Plessis to open. This was certainly an interesting move, considering G Smith had failed in the 1st innings and also has not been playing cricket for quite a few months now. Both JP and Faf, having scored decent runs in the 1st innings as well, put on a decent start to the innings. It was a long opening spell from Ehsan Adil but proved fruitful in the end when he made JP Duminy faulter and edge one to the keeper with the total on 37.

Robin Peterson was another promotion from the South African captain. Faf Du Plessis carried on his good form from the first innings and had scored 42 from 76 balls hitting three fours in his innings and a six off Yasir Shah before calling it a day. Three balls after Du Plesis retired; Usman Qadir struck and got Peterson nicking one to Rizwan who had been very busy in this match.

Philander and M Morkel were then sent in to get some batting practice and they remained not out till the 32nd over when the umpires decided to take out the stumps and declare the match a draw.

Fall of wickets
1-37 (Duminy, 11.5 overs)
2-84 (Du Plessis, 24.6 overs)
3-85 (Peterson, 25.3)

Summary

This match has been a good one for both teams in terms of getting decent practice before the international matches kick off on 14th October. For Pakistan, it has been of more significance as they had to extract the final three squad members from it.

From South Africa’s perspective, the concern would definitely be Smith’s form and to some extent Steyn’s effectiveness in UAE conditions. Though, they will have more positives from their batting with most of their top order batsmen scoring decent runs and spending time in the middle.

For Pakistan, their inexperienced bowlers will gain considerable experience after bowling to world class batsmen. All the three pace bowlers were economical in both innings and also registered their names in the wickets column. The batsmen certainly will put the selectors in a bit of dilemma now as most of them managed to put on a good show and made considerable runs.

This warm up match has now assured that we are looking ahead to a competitive series between the two countries. It will be fascinating to see, if South Africa will prove its dominance one more time over Pakistan, or will the green team, habitually playing against the odds, have a surprise package for the Saffers.
