An exhausting day for the hosts as they only managed to take a single wicket. The match was interrupted by rain several times but the experience duo of Mahela and Sangakkara kept on scoring runs. Sangakkara reached his career 37th hundred and 10th against Pakistan. The match is most likely heading towards a draw with 2 days to go but it would be interesting to see if the overnight rain helps the bowlers with also the second new ball due.

Day 3: Sri Lanka - 252/2 in 80.0 overs (KC Sangakkara 102*, Mahela Jayawardene 55*)

[Overnight: Sri Lanka - 99/1 in 34.0 overs (JK Silva 38, KC Sangakkara 36)]

Morning Session

Sri Lanka started Day 3 with an overnight score of 99-1 with Sangakkara and K Silva at the crease. The hosts looked comfortable against all the Pakistani bowlers apart from Saeed Ajmal. Sangakkara and Silva continued to bat solidly. K Silva brought on 6th fifty of his Test career by smashing Junaid Khan through the mid-wicket area. Sangakkara also completed his fifty as Sri Lanka continued to boss the game.

Pakistani bowlers finally tasted success when Mohammad Talha removed Kaushal Silva with a well bowled out swinger. Silva's wicket brought out Mahela Jayawardene for his last appearance at Galle and he received a great reception on his arrival. Mahela Jayawardene was struck on the pads, the umpire raised his finger after a vociferous appeal from the Pakistani players, Mahela decided to challenge the umpire's decision and go for a review and it turned out to be a superb review as the replays showed the ball was missing the off stump.

At Lunch Sri Lanka were Sri Lanka 174 for 2 with Sangakkara on 63* and Jayawardene 18* at the crease.

Afternoon Session

The match resumed after a post-Lunch rain delay, the veteran Sri Lankan duo continued to build partnership between them as Sri Lanka further strengthened their position. Just 4.3 overs were bowled after the lunch break when rain interrupted play again.

Pakistani bowlers continued to struggle after the rain stoppage, Sri Lanka kept moving along at good pace. Both Sangakkara and Jayawardene reached personal milestones, Jayawardene completed his 49th Test fifty while Sangakkara brought up his 37th Test ton and 10th against Pakistan. Match was again delayed by bad light which was becoming a touch frustrating for the players as umpires called for. The new ball was now due in the last session for Pakistan to take.

At Tea Sri Lanka were 252-2 with Sangakkara on 102* and Jayawardene on 55*

Evening Session

Persistent rain and a wet outfield in the last session prevented any further play and umpires had to call it a day. Sri Lanka remained in a commanding position on 252-2 trailing by 199 runs with 8 wickets in hand

At Stumps Sri Lanka were on 252-2 with Sangakkara on 102* and Jayawardene on 55*
