Sources close to Mohammad Asif confirme to PakPassion.net that the former Pakistan pace bowler is in good spirits...

By Saj Sadiq (November 8, 2011)

A close friend of Mohammad Asif's has confirmed to PakPassion.net that the former Pakistan pace bowler was in good spirits in Category B Wandsworth prison.

Asif was found guilty of conspiring to cheat and conspiring to accept corrupt payments by a jury last Tuesday at Southwark Crown Court and sentenced to 12 months in jail by Justice Cooke two days later.

"I've been to see Asif and it wasn't easy to see him in such a place. After the initial shock of finding himself in prison, he was now in good spirits, all things considered" stated the source.

Lawyers representing Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif are still considering an appeal against his conviction. Success of such as appeal would mean that he may walk free from prison – this was also confirmed by the source who stated that "as yet a final decision on an appeal had not yet been reached by his lawyers."

Asif's close friend also confirmed that he continues to share a cell with Salman Butt who was sentenced to 2 years 6 months in jail last week.

"Asif's sharing a cell with his former captain Salman Butt. An application to move to an open and less harsh prison has been submitted, but Asif will have to wait for this application to be approved before any subsequent relocation would happen."

His close friend further added "He offered Eid prayers with fellow Muslim inmates at Wandsworth prison. It's a very difficult time for Asif, I'm regularly in touch with him. His family and I are trying to provide as much support as possible to him in these difficult times."
