Intikhab Alam speaking with PakPassion.net stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board were keeping an open mind regarding the appointment of a bowling coach
By Saj Sadiq (12th March, 2012)

Intikhab Alam speaking with PakPassion.net stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board were keeping an open mind regarding the appointment of a bowling coach and that just because the two recently appointed coaches were foreign, does not necessarily mean that the bowling coach would also come from overseas.

"The role has been advertised and we are looking to appoint who we feel is the best candidate for the job. Obviously Dav (Whatmore) and Julien (Fountain) are not Pakistani, but that does not necessarily mean that the bowling coach will also come from overseas" stated Alam.

Previous incumbent Aaqib Javed who had worked for the PCB for nearly 11 years in various assignments, recently resigned from the role after he was appointed as head coach of the UAE and opinion is divided upon whether a local coach should be appointed or whether a foreign coach would be of more benefit to the Pakistani bowlers.

Whilst Pakistan's spinners have shown tremendous form of late in all formats and both Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema have shown consistency in their performances, the likes of Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz have struggled when presented with an opportunity.

Double world cup winning coach Intikhab though feels that the opinion of current head coach Dav Whatmore will be invaluable when it comes to the selection of the new bowling coach and added "We will speak with Dav also about his opinions on who he feels from the list of applicants would be best suited for the role, as it is important that we know what his thoughts are on this matter."

Alam added "It's an important role, Pakistan has a rich heritage when it comes to world class bowlers and we intend to continue that with the appointment of the new bowling coach, who will be expected to work with the current international selections and bowlers at the National Cricket Academy as well."

Applications for the vacancy close on 22nd March with former Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Akram having already confirmed that he will be applying for the post. From within Pakistan, Jalaluddin is highly rated amongst the players, but fans favourite and former Pakistani bowling great Wasim Akram is unlikely to apply for the role due to his media assignments and due to the role being on a full time basis.
