A source close to Shafiq confirmed to PakPassion he has commenced gym work .

26 year old middle order batsman Asad Shafiq is on track to be fully fit for the tour of South Africa which commences on 1st February.
The Karachi born batsman has featured in 61 matches for Pakistan since making his international debut in a one day international at Dambulla against Bangladesh in June 2010 and has become an integral part of the Pakistani Test side making 894 runs in 16 Test matches at an average of 42.57, including two centuries and six half centuries.
Shafiq suffered a stress fracture of his left hand whilst playing for Habib Bank in the President's Trophy tournament in November and subsequently missed the Faysal Bank T20 tournament. He was therefore not considered for selection for the ongoing limited overs tour of India.
PakPassion.net understands that Shafiq has been given the go ahead to resume playing cricket and has already resumed light training.
A source close to Shafiq confirmed to PakPassion that Asad has commenced gym work and whilst the next round of Quaid E Azam Trophy matches start on 2nd January, the realistic option for him will be to play for Karachi Whites in their match against Rawalpindi at the National Stadium in Karachi beginning on 7th January.
"Asad's on track to recommence playing cricket. It's been a frustrating time for him and he's keen to get back to playing first class cricket and then hopefully international cricket. The doctors have stated that he can start playing again and that's come as a huge relief to him. The realistic target for Asad is to play in the Quaid E Azam Trophy match commencing 7th January which allows the injury an extra few days to heal" stated the source.
Shafiq will have the opportunity to impress the selectors in the ongoing Quaid E Azam Trophy prior to the announcement of the squad for South Africa.
The tough South African tour which is expected to examine the techniques of Pakistan's top order batsmen will see Pakistan face the top ranked Test team in three Test matches, two T20Is and then five one day internationals.
