The most concerning aspect of Ijaz Butt's leadership is the way he has handled his first press conference. Why would you announce that Lawson's contract would not be renewed when there is still six months to go, and a very important test series with India.
First Look at Ijaz Butt (by the true passionist)

21st October 2008

It is too early to make a judgment about Ijaz Butt but his first few days in office have been less than impressive.

Blaming everything on the past, and using it to make radical changes in the administration is nothing new to our culture. It is widely used from sports bodies, local nazims right up to the president and prime minster of the country.

It is understandable to bring your own core team to be able to deliver on your goals but to radically change everything seems beyond reason. Bringing Saleem Altaf back who was just fired because of releasing confidential information to the media for personal gains does not make any sense. Have we forgotten how unprofessional was he in dealing with Waqar Younis? Can't we find any decent exec in the country?

Nothing has been revealed about the last minute changes to the team for the W.I T20 tournament which led to the resignation of the chief selector and possibly the loss of the tournament. Will this be swept under the rug? Besides there is no need to completely change the selection committee who were appointed only recently.

The most concerning aspect of Ijaz Butt's leadership is the way he has handled his first press conference. Why would you announce that Lawson's contract would not be renewed when there is still six months to go, and a very important test series with India. Has Lawson got enough chances to display his competence when major tours and tournaments have been canceled. Will Lawson lose his job even if we manage to beat India?

Bringing ICL-IPL issue to the media, when he himself doesn't have a clear stance on the issue, might just jeopardize the chances of a decent resolution. What would other members of the ICC think of Ijaz for openly discussing something that was obviously confidential? Does this already put him on the back foot in efforts to restore the image of PCB?

I hope he answers these questions by showing sensible leadership. The jury is still out on that. He not only has to select the right people to lead Pakistan Cricket out of this mess that it is in today but there are several challenges ahead of him. What is going to be the policy of PCB regarding ICL, IPL, offshore matches, Mohamad Asif, security concerning ICCT in 2009, and hosting the Aussies for the test and ODI series in the near future?

All eyes are upon him because Pakistan Cricket's future is dependent upon his performance more than those of Malik or Lawson.
