Speaking earlier today to PakPassion.net from Rawalpindi, KRL opening batsman Azhar Ali hailed the impact that left arm pace bowler Mohammad Irfan has had in the Quaid E Azam Trophy for KRL.

"Irfan has been bowling really well this season and its a great achievment considering its his first season in Pakistan domestic cricket. He has troubled a lot of the batsman who have faced him" stated Azhar.

Azhar who has played in all 3 of KRL's matches in the 2009/10 Quaid E Azam Trophy competition further added "Irfan's bouncer is a very important delivery for him and he uses it as a surprise delivery. As you can imagine it causes the batsmen quite a few problems and he has taken quite a few wickets with his bouncer. He also has a very good effort delivery which is another surprise delivery and is a few mph more than his normal deliveries, but I feel that the real weapon Irfan has is the yorker/low full toss. The fact that it comes down from such a height means that it's very difficult to pick up. I have faced him in the nets quite a lot and he is not an easy bowler to face".

Responding to a question regarding what speed Irfan is bowling at, Azhar stated "I stand at slip or gully so I have a good view of him in action, and I would say that whilst he's not the quickest around at the moment, he's normally between 75mph and 80 mph, but the effort delivery that he bowls will be around the 82 or 83mph mark. A bowler like Irfan doesnt need to generate a lot of pace to trouble the batsman, as he has the ability to generate lift and bounce from a good length, which he has been able to achieve on a regular basis".

When asked about how he feels that Irfan is coping with the riguors of first class cricket, Azhar stated that "Irfan is in good shape, fully fit and he's very keen to bowl. He's not a bad fielder also, and not someone who you just send down to third man or fine leg all of the time".

Whilst Irfan was used as second change on debut vesus PIA, he opened the bowling in KRL's previous match against Karachi Whites where he took 11 wickets and Azhar feels that he is equally effective with both the new ball and the old ball. "He bowled very well with the new ball against Karachi and I think he will be given the new ball on a regular basis" stated Azhar.
