What do England do now?
And what changes should they make when they play Sri Lanka in June, should Cook be retained as a Captain or should someone else take over?
Kudos to him for regrouping this retarded Aussie bunch (discipline wise) and getting them to fight hard against arguably the best test side out there (along with RSA). Australian cricket looked hopeless under Mickey Arthur, they got embarrassed in India and we didnt even see any close matches there.
Here's an excerpt from Jonathan Agnew's article for the BBC today (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/25610891)
You can look at every aspect of this tour - the attitude of the players, the fact England arrived as favourites, the 82-page menu - and it all paints a picture of a team which has become far too insular. That was illustrated when I put a question to captain Alastair Cook. I asked whether the opinions of those outside of the team - those who have played cricket all their lives and have watched the game for years - were worth seeking, and he said no. He said essentially it was for those within the team to work out what has gone wrong. That is a worry to me and shows there is no real awareness of what is happening outside the team's bubble. |
I understand he was referring to people like himself in the media - should such individuals be used as "consultants" for national cricket teams? These guys do watch a lot of cricket and part of their job involves a large amount of technical analysis into players' techniques etc (think 3rd Man on Sky Sports).
The other angle to this is that I imagine many fans watch a lot more cricket than these guys but surely no team would realistically consider taking a fan's viewpoint on board!
We all saw Cook perform in the 2010 Ashes where he was at the peak of his batting, scoring 766 runs in 7 innings but in the other 4 Ashes series he remained in poor form and his average remained in the 20s in 4 out of 5 Ashes series.
He scored 3 centuries in the 2010 Ashes but only 1 century in other 4 Ashes series. In 2010 Ashes series he scored 766 runs with an average of 127 but in other 4 Ashes series he scored 1021 runs in total with an average of 26
Why so poor in the other series/
Sooner rather than later his tenure with the ECB is going to come to an end.
The recently concluded Ashes series probably doesn't do justice to what a fine job Flower has done.
If the PCB has the resources and they genuinely want to benefit the Pakistani players, would it be a bad idea to appoint Andy Flower as the Pakistan batting coach, working at the Academy, with the Under 19s and the senior team?
He scored 407 runs in 5 innings with an average of 81 when batting 1st innings and 86 runs in 3 innings with an average of 28 in 2nd innings of this Ashes series.
