During a day (month!) jam-packed with exam revision, the hour I spent with the Pakistan squad today as they trained during a chilly Edinburgh morning was a breath of fresh air. First of all I would like to thank Saj and Cricket Scotland for allowing me to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I was the sole media presence at the team's first practice session since arriving from Pakistan, allowing me the luxury of freely covering proceedings during the training session.
I know many people are on the T20 bandwagon and feel Test cricket should be allowed to die a slow death, but I'm sure the majority still realise that it's the best form of the game and produces cricketers of the highest quality.
That said, what should the PCB be doing to ensure young players coming through actually WANT to play Tests?
An idea I have always though would work relates to the contracts which were announced yesterday. I feel that any player that regularly plays Test cricket should never be awarded lower than a category B contract. In addition, any player that does not play Tests should never be awarded higher than a category B contract.
This would be a nice, clean, simple way for the PCB to show that Test cricket is the number 1 priority, and that players will be rewarded for committing to the toughest form of the game.
England.
For the host of the final edition of the Champions Trophy, it is fitting that we return to the home of cricket.
For Pakistan, they can bank on past success in global tournaments in England. (Reached the final of the 1999 World Cup, semi-finals of 2004 Champions Trophy, winners of 2010 World Twenty20).
Regarding the two venues for Pakistan's group matches, they would have only played 1 ODI at the Kennington Oval in nearly 10 years when they take the field vs. West Indies for their opening match. What a match it was however, as Pakistan roared back in the 3rd ODI vs. England in 2010 to win by 23 runs after England required 41 from 12 overs with 5 wickets in hand. At the ground for their other two group matches (vs. India & South Africa), Edgbaston, Pakistan has won 3 of their past 4. One of their 3 wins was very memorable as it was a 3 wicket victory vs. arch-rivals, India in the 2004 Champions Trophy.
Despite being controversial on some issues, Aamir Sohail was one of the best chief selector we had for the last 10-12 years. He tried to bring the young players and send home the old baggage.
Since PMLN is coming in power and he is very close with Mian Nawaz and in fact, if I remember correctly, he has joined PMLN, so just expect Aamir Sohail in getting some big role in cricket and seeing some interesting decisions in the team in the coming months.
Did you hear what Englishman, David Lloyd "Bumble", had to say on Pakistan's chances in the upcoming Champions Trophy?
How do you define charisma? Charismatic cricketers would probably be defined as having achievements bar none on the field. Having some glamor attached to your personality. Somebody you just love to be and the ability to inspire millions. Keeping this definition in mind three names pop into my mind.
